Chapter 1 - Father[]

As Guren races down the stairs to confront the vampire, Mahiru teasingly shames him for being "aroused." Her word choice confuses him, considering the situation. She explains that existential drives increase when one is about to die, and that she’s not even entirely sure this is the vampire he needs to speak to in order to save Shinya and the others.

Guren attacks the vampire noble, but he effortlessly counters and dodges Shinya's bullets. He reveals that his body has been altered, and that he is a fifth progenitor. Recognizing that they can't beat him, Guren shouts at Shinya to stay back. The noble knows Guren’s name, providing further evidence that Mahiru isn’t just a hallucination. She demonstrates the ability to read his thoughts and says that the object of his "arousal" is his desire to be freed from guilt.

The vampire, having introduced himself as Caek Sanorium, refers to Saitō as his master Rígr Stafford. Before he reveals why he came, Shinya runs up despite Guren's warnings to stay away. However, at that moment, Goshi and the others get the power back up, so Shinya retreats and waits for them to arrive. Caek resumes what he was saying, stating that he's only here to give Guren a “good toss” so that his friends don't think he's betrayed them. He proceeds to throw him a considerable distance away, and Saitō appears before him. Once Guren recovers from his injuries, he points his sword at the ex-second progenitor, demanding to know what he did to Mahiru. Saitō replies that he helped her do exactly what she wanted–to support Guren from within and help him survive.

Saitō asks Guren who he thinks built the world, who made it the way it is. Guren retorts with a “How should I know?” and Saitō reveals that he was about Guren’s age, or perhaps in his twenties, when he was turned into a vampire by the Sire. He speaks of him like a god, claiming that this world’s story has been written by him. He reveals that long ago, he created the Hyakuya Sect to oppose the Sire’s Order of the Imperial Demons. However, they conducted research without his knowledge, seeming to play right into the Sire's hands. Saitō was also the cause of the Ichinose House’s expulsion from the Order, and he inserted his own tissue into the Ichinose Girl's child–technically making Guren related to him. Thinking of the oppression the Ichinoses had to endure all these years, Guren furiously attacks, but is easily slapped to the floor.

Saitō continues, saying that the Sire has no interest in the human heart, and that the casting out of the Ichinoses didn't strike him as important. Saitō made Guren for the purpose of abducting "the maiden," AKA Mahiru, from the pages of the Sire's story. However, he assures him that he didn't have anything to do with them falling in love. He then pulls out a small crucifix-shaped dagger. Mahiru materializes next to him and, somehow, despite being unable to see or hear her, he stabs her in the throat with it, claiming to be "hiding a sin."

Just then, Shinya crashes through the wall from the battle against Caek and Saitō vanishes, leaving behind an envelope. Mahiru instructs Guren to pick it up without Shinya noticing, and he does so. He feels hopeful knowing that greater forces are at work, raising his chances to find a way to prevent his resurrected friends from dying again in ten years. He and Shinya push themselves to the limit of demonic possession and jump all the way back to the battlefield, but by then Caek is already gone, having left after sucking the blood of Mito, Goshi, Sayuri, and Shigure.

In better spirits now that the power is up and running, they head home. On the way, Guren reads the content of the envelope as Mahiru tells him she's feeding on his desire to know the secret and that she loves him. The paper inside contains information on how to rescue two test subjects, Yūichirō Amane and Mikaela Shindō.

Chapter 2 - The Boy Who Wished the World Would End[]

The whirring of helicopter blades fills the air. The orphanage director lies dead, pandemonium is erupting outside, and a small girl whose name Yu doesn’t know clings to him in fear. Vampires break through the windows, sucking the children’s blood. A booming voice announces the end of the world, but Yu doesn’t feel much upon hearing it. His world ended when his parents tried to kill him. Nonetheless, the warmth of the children huddling around him still flusters him.

They are being transported in a helicopter brought by the vampires. Yu has hardly any memories besides being kept in a cell, and a strange girl coming to speak to him, and a man named Saitō taking him to the Hyakuya Orphanage. He looks at a boy named Mikaela, who told him they were going to be family when they first met, and a girl named Akane, who still seems a bit wary of him. Yu figures she’ll realize soon enough that he’s a devil child not worthy of her friendship, but then, she thanks him. She says that without him, the younger kids would have caused a scene and been thrown out of the helicopter, but thanks to the three of them whispering reassurances, they have managed to stay quiet.

Eventually, everyone except Mika and Yu fall asleep. Yu gets annoyed when he spots the blond staring at him. They share a brief banter that ends with Yu sighing deeply and Mika laughing, saying it’s not that bad. Yu tells him to look around, pointing out that he doesn’t even know who these kids are. Mika replies that they’re his family, despite Yu’s denials. He claims that they’re all the same, revealing that his parents tossed him out of a moving car, and that Akane was abandoned because she stabbed one of the naked grown-ups chasing her around. He challenges Yu’s rejection of them, asking what makes someone a family. Yu frowns without responding, hugging the sleeping children surrounding him a little tighter.

He questions Mika’s smile, calling it an idiotic look. Mika says that soon enough he will start making it too, for his family’s sake. Yu repeats that he doesn’t have a family, but Mika just laughs. They fall asleep, and Yu wishes that when he wakes up, the world will still be destroyed, that these children who need him will still be with him. His wish comes true.

The vampires declare that starting today they are livestock, but Yu can only laugh. He knows that he isn’t alone anymore. He and Mika assure the other children that it’s going to be alright, and Yu tells them that one day, he’ll get strong enough to beat up all the vampires. He promises himself to keep repeating that until he truly believes it. With that, their new life in the vampire world begins.

Chapter 3 - The Japanese Imperial Demon Army[]

With the power back on, Kureto decides to make his next move; by mobilizing the children of the followers of the Order of Imperial Demons to transform Shibuya into a livable place. As they transport endless piles of bodies to be burned, Kureto gazes upon the burning pyre. As they've done this daily offering prayers. Kureto plans to restore the city, country and they will continue to live in the place. Kureto talks to Guren as they observe the funeral pyres, who wants to leave, but Kureto wants him to stay by his side, As Guren asks him if he has another one of his speeches. Kureto agrees, but Guren thought he is done with his speeches, however Kureto states, that it is not enough, and they should hear him dozen times over and yet it still wouldn't be enough, he wants the people to unified, to be given a purpose.

Aoi hands Kureto his microphone, as his voiced echoed across all of Shibuya, as the children watch Kureto with his microphone, they revere him. Guren smirked at him calling him "Mister Popular" Kureto glances at him, mentioning he has fans himself. As Kureto thanks him for getting power on, adding this speech is for him too, as the children need to look up to him. Guren brushes his statement off, as he can't order him around. Angered, Aoi glared at him insulting him for being a lowly Ichinose, threatening to kill him, ready to take out her sword. As Guren tells her she could try, Kureto orders her stand down, stating that if she wants to kill him she should do it somewhere else, as Kureto is going to start his speech. Kureto points out Guren wouldn't do it either way as there are no hostages.

Kureto starts his speech to the children and Guren as he talks about the Order of the Imperial Demons, their families, and god. He believes there is no god and that is what the Order of the Imperial Demons believes, he continues on as the other religious syndicate in all of Japan, mainly the Brotherhood of a Thousand Nights. He declares and announces that the Order of the Imperial Demons will take on a new name, suitable for the saviors who will rebuild this world. Now naming it the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, and now they are all soldiers of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. The children then repeat the organization name.

After finishing his speech, Kureto glances at Guren, thought he told him to look important for the children. Guren sighs at this and raises his fist in the air, and the children go wild, repeating, cheering and chanting even louder that they are the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. Kureto grins with excitement, saying excellent and welcomes Guren to the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. Guren asks Kureto if this was all his idea, bringing together all the religions, making them soldiers. Kureto answers he was just following orders as they tried kidnapping and brainwashing some children, which Kureto decides that this was the most effective way of going about things. Guren says he is stepping into his father's shoes, Kureto says he is and that he will save the world, with Guren's help.

Kureto later leaves in a car with Aoi, while Guren stays behind pondering that god doesn't exist and human desires and the curse it brings, yet Guren stared at the children, who still continue their chanting. Finding all of this divine punishment. Mahiru then appears alighted softly before Guren. She asks him if it ever occur to him if it was punishment for sleeping with her, she continues saying that it is a forbidden love. However Guren tells her she's just a fantasy and she only exists inside his mind, but Mahiru tells Gurens that's not right here. Guren tells her, he still believes that she's nothing but a hallucination created by his demon. Mahiru does tell him she is a demon. With Guren answering her previous question with a question that how can he sleep with a fantasy. When Mahiru starts to tease him, Guren coldly tells her to go away. but she laughs. Guren says to her if she does suppose exist, but Mahiru asks the latter that she has already proven to him that she exist, when she told Guren that a vampire was coming, so he shouldn't think about suppose to.

Guren believe the previous information might actually have come from Guren himself while he was under demonic control however, Mahiru cuts him as he is wrong and he is way off the mark. Guren thinks that she is reading his thoughts, but Mahiru says she can't as he built a wall around his mind, though if he should lower it they could share much information. Guren refuses so, but Mahiru bet to differ, calling him a scaredy cat. But Guren tells her, he can't be blamed, for being scared of her, considering her past as well. Mahiru advices him to conquer his fear, as humans can only grow stronger if they faced their fears. Guren counters her statement that she did face hers, and now she isn't a human anymore. Which Mahiru states she could say the same for him, but Guren rejects that statement as he is human. Only for her to laugh. Guren asks her how much does she know about what Saito said, the tissues being inside his ancestor's body, assuming if what he said is true she should know something.

Mahiru denies all of that, informing Guren that she didn't know, and rather she doesn't about all of that. She says everything was planned, even their first encounter was hundreds of years ago. Guren tells her, he will lower the walls in his mind as he wants information, however Mahiru noticed Shinya coming Guren's way and she vanished. Shinya teases Guren, that he saw him earlier with the children, thinking he is cool. Annoyed Guren tries to kick him but Shinya dodges. After some small talk, Guren says he thought he wasn't going to come today. Shinya wasn't planning to, but due Kureto daily speeches he had especially with the birth of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. Guren says it's amazing giving the same speech every day. Guren makes fun of his speech, which makes Shinya bursts out laughing. Seeing his friends' smiling faces makes Guren think that he did the right thing resurrecting them.

Shinya tells Guren that at breakfast Goshi was going on about some big discovery, and that the reason he wasn't hunting monsters in Shibuya that morning was because he was tired. The children have been approaching Guren for swordsmanship tutoring and other magical training. Due to the fact he saw before one the children die by the hands of these monsters, Guren vowed that the next time would be different and he began dedicating all of his spare time to training the children along with Shinya.

Shinya tells him that the wall has been finished and that they can create a barrier so the creatures can't get too close. Guren is skeptical and suggests that they should demand answers from Kureto. Later Guren walks past the children whom looked at him with admiration. Shinya took a bike and offers Guren a ride. Guren listens to Shinya's heartbeat and wonders how many times it will beat within ten years.

Shinya tells Guren how he is proud of Goshi, keeping a smile on his face despite everything that's happened. Guren then starts to think about his friends relieved they are alive if each one is with him now, by Mito it would be games, Sayuri cooking, and Shigure though in thought he believes because of her expression it's hard to think what's the best way she would be. As Guren and Shinya later reached a destination, a building around Shibuya. As they sped toward the building that had become the official barracks of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army.

Chapter 4 - Two Geniuses[]

At 9:15 PM night, the children should be in bed for safety. But others who are awake are on duty. Guren is now ranked Second Lieutenant in the Japanese Imperial Demon Army to fill the holes of the adults, and despite his hard work and getting the power on for Kureto's mission, he is branded as an Ichinose traitor. Even though he didn't care, as Goshi and Mito had also been given rank lieutenant colonels. Due to Shinya's status as a Hiragi he has been given a rank for colonel, though all this flies over the children's heads. Guren is annoyed by all this ruckus and wishes to head back to his room. On the way to his room, Goshi yells at him and the children who is in Guren room. Instead Goshi wants Guren to stay as he have something much more interesting. Goshi calls it his treasure, Shinya follows both of them. The children who are in the hallway notice both Guren and Shinya, addressing them with respect.

Guren calls Goshi's so-called treasure the corruption of public morals, forcing sitting next to some children. When Goshi hears the name, about the corruption, naming it a rare treasure calling Guren philistine. Guren dares him to say that in front of Mito. Guren shouts at the children stating it's their bed time. The children complain that all the adults get to have all the fun while they sleep, though Shinya chuckles upon hearing them saying such thing, as someone should inform them they are only sixteen. Guren and the others later watch DVD one of Goshi's collection, which doesn't interest Guren. Bored, Guren announces he is going to bed, but Goshi wants him to stay a little more as he made tea for everyone, Eventually Guren sat, Goshi mentions finally it is time.

Mito came out after taking a shower, totally confused and wondering what are they are watching. Whom Guren thought she was on mission, As the movie continued, she inquires what's the show, Guren answers her it is a documentary about couples. The movie continued when they reached the ice cream part, they fight amongst each other, promoting Mito to call them losers. After pausing the movie, the group feels they want ice cream, which Mito agrees and wants to. Shigure and Sayuri later show up while they were watching, yet Guren thought they were in a mission as well. Confused at first, who were same Mito, Shigure inquires what they are watching, only for Mito this time to answer a couple movie. Continuing on the movie, Shinya lies to the girls that this is Guren favorite movie, with Goshi agrees with him. Guren is annoyed by this, however upon hearing the lie from Shinya and Goshi, all the girls watch the documentary movie in concentration.

As the movie starts getting more romantic actions, the girls blush. However Mito raged and had enough, kicking the TV, breaking it, demanding an explanation from Guren. Guren who was at a loss for words. Shinya and Goshi chided at Guren for being shameful. Though Sayuri and Shigure thought that he must have his reasons. Yet Mito isn't convinced, still demanding for him to say something. Guren begins to cry, moved that they can all be silly together despite his friends having died not too long ago. Mito notices tears in his eyes as he plays it off with a yawn. Still not satisfied without an explanation, Guren tells her that she must be tired too. Though Mito tells him how is she supposed to sleep after getting a decent explanation from the show. Guren just wanted to sleep, before demanding an explanation. As Goshi and Shinya who put the blame on Guren for such a show they also prompt a convincing reason.

Guren tells the girls to watch it for another hour, claiming he shows up in the porn and gets naked. All of the girls are in shock at this, Shigure asks him if he is joking, but Guren denies so. Shigure thought he is teasing them. In the end she apologizes for doubting him and they will fast forward it one hour watching. Guren then ignored them and left. Shinya who had followed him in the hallway had a keen intuition as he noticed his earlier yawn was actually Guren crying, asking about if he really did cry, which he denies as as he was only holding his yawning. Shinya sticked with Guren, demanding answer for his cry. As they are walking, both Shinya and Guren noticed a young boy with a cursed gear weapon. He immediately started insulted Guren, calling him a lowly Ichinose. Annoyed and bored by this, as it happened to him before, he agrees with the young boy apologizing and will be more careful next time. Guren continued going with the flow, as he kept insulting his status.

Shinya starts to become annoyed as well. Guren whispers to Shinya, to get rid of him as he is a Hiragi, Shinya obligingly so by starting to tell him there has been a misunderstanding. Ignored, the boy challenges Guren, wanting to see how strong is he. Shinya chuckles so and departed to his own room. Guren starts to become more annoyed, wondering how many of these idiots he'll have to deal with. Stepping outside the barracks, revealing that the young boy has brought several of his friends with him. Guren and the young boy started fighting, with Guren setting an ambush for him In Guren's head he hears Mahiru's voice, mentioning that these boys are stronger than they look, which Guren notices so. Mahiru asks if he can handle them, but Guren, guesses so as he is not sure. Guren asks her if she would give up on him if he loses. Yet Mahiru will keep loving him no matter what.

As the boy ready to start to fight, Guren doesn't see any point in doing so. But he wants to see what an Ichinose is made of. Guren asks who he is and if he is new around the area. Only for the boy to refuse telling him his name, being just an Ichinose. The young boy draws his Cursed Gear sword. Even when Guren told him that the friends he brought will be needed for his help. The boy smirking, arrogantly states he can handle him all on his own. As his friends believe in him as well. Having laid his own trap, with his friends ready to help if necessary. Mahiru speaks to Guren to simply beat him to death and his friends will plead him to stop. Guren shuts her up, but she says that she represent his desires. Guren counters Mahiru state that he can control her. She then wishes to sheathe her if he is sure, in order to discipline the this insolent brat. The boy says to draw his sword, Mahiru mocks the boy and his friends to draw her, but she is ignored. As the fight started Guren didn't draw his sword, surprising Mahiru.

Guren started taking care of his friends easily, using spell tags on the ground, and take control of the trap set. Guren then dodges the boy strike from behind which surprised him. Guren started taking care of his friends with ease, until the boy declared for them to draw their sword After all of them were easily taken care of by spell tags. Leaving the boy alone, as he charged at Guren recklessly, whom he dodged his strikes. He then threw another spell tag, Guren had hidden on the heel of his shoe, controlling the trap as well. Unaware that Guren has taken the upper hand, the boy is still adamant that he has him beat. He calls Guren an idiot for not noticing the trap they already laid around him. As he was busy refusing to draw his sword, Despite Guren knowing full well of the trap beforehand, he remained quiet. The boy and his friends continue insulting his Ichinose status despite being strong. He even goes as far as to demand him to apologize in the dirt for forgetting his place.

Mahiru then manifests next to Guren stating that she already told him how good it would feel. The boy informs him that the barrier he set up is impenetrable and only he can dispel it. He keeps on telling Guren to get on dirt and apologize as he already lost. Despite Guren well aware of all of this. The boy calls him if he is so scared that he don't even know how to kneel. The manifested Mahiru starts to become more aggressive, asking if he is going to kneel which Guren denies so. Then she goes on to say, he should just let him know that he is aware of his trap already in the most painful way. Reminding him how did he toy with her and Kureto. She then informs him that they are being watched by "enemies". Guren notices all of his five friends as onlookers. Meanwhile the boy and now his friends continued to taunt him to kneel. Guren calls them these boys aren't very nice. He then him began walking towards the trap, despite the boy warnings him if he keeps, he will die.

As the trap activated, triggering a net of bright light as it began rising from the earth, however since Guren was controlling the trap the whole time, it targeted the boy much to his surprise one of his friend girl caught in the trap including himself, pleading for help. Guren sighs, forcing him to unsheathe his sword, slicing through the net, saving him in the process. With a look of surprise on the boy's face, he started to slowly thank him but Guren cut him out, punching the boy. He lectures the boy about his actions and how he almost got killed, just over some personal vendetta. Guren kept on lecturing him about the danger he was in, while the boy kept calling him names earlier. When Guren mentions if he had drawn his sword from the start he would've cut his girl's friend head off at his first strike. Mahiru voices him if that is the reason he kept her in her sheathe, as he wanted to give a speech. Guren kept shouting at the young boy, in the end he apologized, which Guren wasn't interested in an apology either.

Mahiru says to Guren if he just wanted to prove himself that he were right to make himself feel better. ignored. She continues if it was just self-flagellation, as she starts talking about how he failed to protect his friends, promoting Guren to shuts her up and go away, but she continues on it wasn't his fault. Annoyed he again tells her to go away. Guren friends come to him them, Shinya teases him naming him mister cool. The boy comes next to Guren and reveals that it was his parents who taught him the Ichinose were worthless garbage. He says it was his mistake, and should have realized how strong was Guren, as the leader of the Ichinose clan. Guren asks the boy his name, stating it's Kuro Kuki, Guren then is told by Kuro that all of his Kuki's clan were wiped out, and the Hiragis took him in as a hostage. Which Guren figures the whole situation and the reason he started the fight. Guren and Kuro reconciled with each other. Shinya teases Guren telling him he now made a few more fans. Mito then reveals that she did watch the tape and he lied to them. Surprising Guren that they actually watched it, he even calls her a pervert. Which flusters Mito's face red. She tries to punch him, but he easily catches her fist.

Kuro and his friends look on surprise at how he blocked Mito who is from the Jujo clan, finding Guren amazing. Though Guren ignored them, as Mito, Sayuri and Shigure kept on harping on about the video. Guren later went to his room, tired after all what happened today, prior to his sleep Mito still demands an explanation. He is unexpectedly visited by Ferid who has an unconscious little girl with him, Guren demands his arrival. Ferid starts to tell to Guren he deserves a thanks from him as there was a sixth progenitor on patrol but Ferid fought her for Guren's sake. taking on a vampire of a higher rank, he starts explaining how much troops the vampire had led and Ferid took care of them all in order to reach him. Ferid keeps on explaining his situation, even mentioning if anyone were to see them talking with each other, his precious resurrected friends might vanish forever. Guren denies he would. Guren drew his sword and glares at Ferid, as he keeps on talking if there is a meaning for life. But Guren asks the noble if life is pointless then why not just die already. As he grins, he tells him how long he lived as a vampire, informing Guren how vampire desire for blood and they don't even sleep. Guren asks him again why doesn't he die then. Ferid laughs telling the former to kill him.

Guren then raises his sword, levelling it at Ferid's throat. As Ferid tells him hurry up in delight, Guren inquires why so, and the point of all of this. Ferid informs him that he bears someone scent, confusing Guren. whom he also informs his fathers Saitō or addressed Rigr Stafford by Ferid, the ex-former second progenitor. As well as he is his father and the one who sired him. Ferid then proceeds to drink blood from Guren's neck, despite having his sword at his throat, Guren wouldn't kill him, as Ferid is his only real friend, as well as he have the information he wants. When Guren mentions that Saito's blood is running in his veins. Ferid suddenly becomes very interested as he kept questioning him who told him, if it was Saito himself, wanting to know when did all of this happen. Which Guren notices his interest. Mahiru then appeared in front of Guren, and put a finger to her lips. Although she is unseen by others, Ferid senses a presence, and mentions he does not like it. Mahiru spoke to Guren to kill him, as he is going to interfere with their plans. Ferid asks if someone else beside Guren, but Mahiru fills Guren's head to kill him.

Ferid notices his sword began to swirl out of control, as curses envelope Guren's arm. Ferid thinking that he plans to fight him, while Mahiru interrupted Guren thoughts that he should only trusts her obviously, with the sword acting on it's own she again tells him to kill Ferid. Guren pleads Ferid to get away from him, as Mahiru is trying to kill him, being inside of Guren. Ferid is amused that she still lives on. As Mahiru starts to take more control of Guren's body. Ferid laughs as of anything she should kill him, as he is on Guren's side, sharing a common enemy which is Saito. The sword continues attacking Ferid, and Guren's minds was filled with the desire to kill, Pleading Mahiru to stop, she assures it will be alright, and relax, let him go to sleep and it will be over by the time he wakes up, as she will take care of everything. Guren's figures she's trying to possess him. Mahiru denies this claim and they are both each other, and forces him to sleep.

Guren now has a more feminine tone. Dark magic curses spread across his entire his body, Ferid finds this interesting. Ferid is mocked by Mahiru who has now possessed Guren, saying he has serious daddy issues. Mahiru now fights Ferid who dodges all her attacks, and breaks Guren's skull however with his newly superhuman powers, it heals instantaneously. as Ferid inquires why she has come out, simply answering to kill him, Ferid is confident she can't. She reminds him that he is in Shibuya the headquarters of the most vicious magical syndicate in existence. She laughs when Ferid mentions she will be revealed as well, causing Shinya and the others to die, and says that those are Guren's pathetic attachments, and got nothing to do with her. Mahiru continues her vicious attack calling to Guren's sword, as it flew striking his bed, slicing it in half and cleaves through and three walls behind that, killing the little girl and many others. This was to reveal to the outside that there is a vampire noble is in the barracks. An alarm sounded, with Ferid surrounded by soldiers equipped with Cursed Gears. Chuckling Mahiru says this is his final day, and he is dying today. Grinning, Ferid denies so, saying he will have to find another day to die and he flees.
