Angels (天使 Tenshi?, also translated as Seraphs) in Seraph of the End are terms for a group of powerful beings that are seen to exist within human hosts, whom are being secured and used as living weapons of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. Kureto Hīragi had one prepared for transport as part of his plan to imprison the vampires in Nagoya in a successful campaign to overpower what were stronger foes. According to Kureto, they are vital to humanity's survival.

Many known human hosts have been secured by the Japanese Imperial Demon Army and are either active officers who managed to access seraphs along with Cursed Gear, or live subjects who have been heavily medicated in order to force both seraph and host into submission. Generally, seraphs are extremely hostile to humans and seek their destruction.

The Seraph of the End is a magical curse created by human experimentations and then grown inside a person. Some seraphs were experimented on by the Hyakuya Sect prior to the apocalypse. The term "seraph" refers to a type of angel. Guren Ichinose has been experimenting on them as well where one was kept restrained at his residence. So far, all of the humans tested are capable of handling the Black Demon Series weapons. Both the Hyakuya Sect and Japanese Imperial Demon Army erased the memories of the experimentation from their test subjects. Other surviving human organizations around the world have experimented on the Seraph of the End, but even their cruelty pales in comparison to the that of the Demon Army. Mikaela Hyakuya has been on missions overseas to destroy the surviving cult groups. The test subjects often scream or even beg for death prior to their transformations.

Like the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the seraphs strive to kill all humans and display absolutely no interest in vampires if they transform properly. They speak in archaic language and have no recollection of their human identities. Kureto succeeds in controlling the Fifth Trumpet for a period of time by making many sacrifices and using the demon Abaddon for possession. Some of the seraphs have abilities loosely related to those listed in Revelation chapters 8 through 9 in the New Testament of the Bible and are referred to by their trumpets.

In the Catastrophe light novels, Mahiru Hīragi brings Guren Ichinose some documents listing the Seraph of the End subjects. Guren collects at least four of them before betraying them during the Nagoya Airport experiment in the Vampire Reign manga series. He has been involved in the transformation of at least two of them thus far.

In the Sixth Trumpet's transformation being reversed by the demon power boosting drug, a cross shaped dagger flew out of his chest, his wings dissolve, and the black liquid stops flowing from his eye. As for the cross shaped dagger, Saitō is shown having two of the exact same objects in his possession,[1] but it does not state whether these two were also from seraphs that turned back into humans like the Sixth Trumpet or not, and it is unknown on what exact purpose they serve. The only clue is Guren saying that the object is being taken to Tokyo for humanity to fight against millennia old monsters.

When Yu had made his way into the world that Mika awoke in where he was the target of a forced possession by Asuramaru, the spell tags around him burning away and feathers descending to the ground heralded the arrival of seraphs. There were three seraphs behind Yu who had become a demon, with light shining down, two of the seraphs had their trumpets visible.[2] With Yu's greatest desire being to rescue Mika, the three seraph's presence may have factored in to Yu being able to overcome Asuramaru's possession attempt and then forcibly change him into his cursed gear sword form. Further, their power may have contributed to Yu being able to almost effortlessly defeat black demons Gekkouin and Kiseki-o. Yu could regenerate his own dismembered arm right after it had been lost, and largely avoid the demon's Thousand Arrows of Light along with the One Thread, One Glint, and Coffins of Chaos powers.

According to Ferid Bathory, the experiment "Seraph of the End" is actually an experiment to revive the dead.[3] According to vampire belief, the humans committed a taboo, currently believed to be reviving the dead, which triggers the appearance of an angel of destruction. This is the reason the vampires conquered the world from underground and crushed any organizations working on that experiment. However, the Demon Army has since learned how to control these angels for themselves.

Ferid mentions that Guren completed the experiment and triggered the Apocalypse when he revived his deceased friends, Shinya Hīragi, Mito Jūjō, Norito Goshi, Shigure Yukimi, and Sayuri Hanayori without their knowledge. This experiment caused the virus that killed off most of the adult population. The five revived individuals appear to have no knowledge of dying and have continued to age and grow since then. At first it was uncertain whether Ferid was telling the truth or not, until he confirms Guren's act.[4]

It is gathered that in breaking a taboo, such as reviving the dead, then the seraph of the end is the weapon that controls and directs the divine retribution. The idea of controlling seraphs to break the taboo with a price not addressed, Guren affirms it is not nearly so convenient and there is a stupidly massive price. Resurrecting the dead is a curse, and if Kimizuki, along with Yoichi, then Yu and Mika want to bring their families back, then they will wind up cursed like Guren too.[5]

So far, three full Seraphs have made an appearance in the story. According to the manga, the abilities of each Seraph is different as they are based on the number of their Trumpet. Yu under the influence of the Second Trumpet is shown to have heightened physical abilities and the power to turn his enemies into salt, while the unnamed Sixth Trumpet is able to summon Horsemen. Mirai is shown to summon the Horsemen as well.[6]

Seraphs are shown to be able to heal their hosts and keep them alive despite fatal wounds, such as Mirai being cured of the apocalypse virus, and Yu being kept alive after he took three cursed gear stimulants, despite all of his internal organs being ruptured already.

By themselves, Seraphs can generate long black spears, with long tapered, trilobate like arrowheads at the tip. These are enveloped with a shimmering fire like substance. Cast from the hand, the electrically imbued shafts of light they become are thrown with precision.

A seraph from overseas.

The appearances of the seraphs in their transformed states vary tremendously, but they all appear to have a wing or wings. It is unclear if this is related to their suitability to the experimentation, what proportion of their body is considered seraph, or which type of experimentation has been performed on them.

So far, the only completely awakened seraphs that have appeared in the story are the ones within Mirai Kimizuki, Yūichirō Hyakuya, and a youth whose name was not stated. Mirai, the Fifth Trumpet, has two giant pairs of feathered wings from her back with a giant trumpet floating beneath her. The curse marks on her skin from the apocalypse virus disappear as well. In the anime, the opposite happens and the number of markings increase despite the fact the virus has no reason to effect an angel.[6] When Abaddon possesses her, the demon manifests in a giant dark figure with many wings behind her and is partially formless. Yu, the Second Trumpet, has dark sclera and a single pair of irregular black wings once he completely transforms. This is because his demon was attempting to stop the seraph from fully taking over.[7] This is why Mirai's wings are bird-like and have feathers, yet Yu's wings are not, as his demon is apparently wrestling control with the seraph. In a flashback, Mika recalls an undernourished seraph child held in a fluid-filled tank with a mask on the face to supply air. The child had feathered wings for arms.

Three seraphs seemingly not in a human form, in what may very well be their true appearance, were seen as having two wings each. Their facial area was obscured by or may have been the dark smoky fire like substance. Appearing again, the seraphs seem clothed in light colored folded cloaks. The wispy fire is still present, where two glowing eye like formations are present within the neck of the cloak. Physically, seraphs are seen to have burnt blackened like hands with four fingers and a thumb, all pointed at the ends, with exceptionally thin wrists as well. A black wispy like tail that may be a part of them or the cloak is also depicted.

Trumpets of the Apocalypse

Note: There are seven trumpets listed here because the Bible lists seven trumpets. The actual number of trumpets in Seraph of the End has yet to be revealed, although seven spaces were listed on Owari no Seraph.Com.

Second Trumpet

The 2nd trumpet, partially awakened

By using a certain drug added to his cursed gear stimulants, Guren unleashes the seraph characteristics within Yūichirō Hyakuya for a few minutes during the battle at Shinjuku. When the drug takes affect, Yu screams and loses his mind as he undergoes a painful transformation. His left eye turns dark and bleeds while a massive black wing-like structure sprouts from his upper right shoulder. Although extremely powerful, he goes berserk and attempts to kill any human nearby. He displays no interest in vampires and recognizes no one.

After ingesting three of the standard Japanese Imperial Demon Army supplements,[8] Yu's internal organs rupture, including his heart. However, the power of the seraphs prevents Yu from dying. Asuramaru advises him that angels can be far nastier than demons. After this event, Yu loses more of his humanity and is implied to become proportionally more seraph in the process.

The 2nd Trumpet, fully awakened

During the battle at the airport in Nagoya, Yu becomes desperate after Guren becomes possessed and Mirai transforms into the Fifth Trumpet to purge humanity. After fainting mid-sentence from his severe injuries Guren gives him, Yu takes the trumpet within his mind and disregards Asuramaru's warning that this will erase the remainder of his humanity. Screaming, he becomes surrounded by a pillar of fire upon his transformation, where Yu sprouts two irregular black wings, and his sclera become dark. He flies freely in this form, while cursing the tainted humans and threatening to turn them into "pillars of salt."[9] Yu easily summons and manipulates vast quantities of salt at will; for example, in the anime he was seen transforming a large volume salt into a spear.[6] After appearing, he attacks the demon Abaddon and disrupts its manifestation.

One Demon Army soldier refers to the second trumpet as the "King of Salt". Once the angel turns his attention to the humans, Asuramaru convinces Yu to become a full demon while Guren encourages the action from below. Horns appear, and Yu uses Asuramaru's blade to stab himself through the chest after he screams about saving his family.

For the past three months,[10] Yu's transformation into a demon gets halted by a drug administered by Ferid Bathory,[3] and it won’t be until later, when Guren trains Yu to control his seraph by making the seraph within Yu go berserk repeatedly.[11] Three days later,[12][13] When fighting Ky Luc, Yu becomes a partial seraph again, but now has fangs due to Asuramaru's influence. Following the fight, Yu is seen in his mind kneeling as the drugs make their way out of his system. Commenting on Yu's clawed hand holding the angel's trumpet, Asuramaru revealed it was the result of the drugs needed to keep the seraph under control. He also states that Yu's body is still being taken over by a demon.[14] It is shown Yu had seraph genes ever since the dark ages of Greece. As a child, Yu as a seraph had white feathered wings since there was no demon to affect them. He retained the murderous streak, going to extent to sever his own arm in order to reach a human.

Fifth Trumpet

Main article: Fifth Trumpet

The 5th trumpet, fully awakened.

On the way to Nagoya, Kureto Hīragi has Mirai Kimizuki injected with drugs to force her to transform. She screams and begs for death until two pairs of white feathered wings sprout from her back.[15]

The 5th being possessed by Abaddon.

It would transpire that Kureto is planning to control an angel, which no one has ever successfully done before. According to Mahiru-no-Yo (who is possessing Guren at the moment), "blood is needed to control the angel." During the Nagoya Airport experiment, Kureto, along with Guren, and Mahiru-no-Yo sacrifice many humans, vampires, and demons to bind Mirai and use their blood to control her after using Abaddon to possess her.[16] This appears to be successful, but the Second Trumpet awakens and destroys Abaddon's manifestation.

Three months later, Mirai is still under Kureto's control as she is used to destroy the underground vampire city of Sanguinem. Also dispatched to Shibuya, the Fifth Trumpet is kept at a distance while Kureto sets about overthrowing Tenri Hīragi. With Abaddon above, the Fifth Trumpet adheres to the command to fire at a barrier Aoi Sangū set up, where the emission successfully makes contact with Tenri. Ordered to attack Shikama Dōji when he appeared, the Fifth Trumpet and Abaddon prepared their attack, before immediately complying with the First's command to stop. Mirai then ends up with a single pair of wings after the appearance of Shikama Dōji.

When Shibuya comes under attack by the Hyakuya Sect, the Fifth Trumpet's wings appear out of Mirai, yet is motionless in between Kimizuki, Saitō and the First who is possessing Shinoa Hīragi's body. Carried away, Mirai would be unconscious where the Fifth Trumpet would not react to her being stabbed by Guren. With that done, a Sinful Key emerged from Mirai's body.

Sixth Trumpet

Main article: Sixth Trumpet

The Sixth Trumpet

The unnamed Sixth Trumpet is introduced imprisoned inside a magical barrier within the underground laboratory of Guren's former mansion in the Aichi Prefecture.[17] Guren claims that the Sixth Trumpet is one of Yu's comrades, and is identified as male.

As with the Fifth Trumpet, the Sixth Trumpet has two pairs of white feathered wings. He has the power to summon Horsemen of the Apocalypse, as Guren reveals to Yu and Mikaela Hyakuya that he has been summoning them onto this world for the past eight years. The Horsemen can be fired as projectiles from the youth's hands that will form into them, and also emerge at seemingly random locations across a vast area.

When questioned by Yu if he has been crying for all these years, the Sixth Trumpet avoids the subject and questions Yu, "Why won't you destroy this world?" Concluding that Yu is not fit to be an angel, the Sixth Trumpet attempts to kill him so that a new King of Salt shall be born.[18] Summoning Horsemen to attack Yu and everyone, with the chains restraining him gone, he takes the fight to the sky.[19] In an exchange between Yu and Asuramaru during the fight, it is revealed that the Sixth Trumpet has a demon inside of him. Eventually, the Sixth Trumpet gets pinned down by Yu with his trumpet knocked away by Mika, for Kimizuki to inject him with a drug. Consequently, the youth floats downwards for a cross shaped dagger to fly out of his chest. He then plummets to the ground as his wings dissolve before being caught by Kimizuki, where he now appeared as a normal human. With the Sixth Trumpet sealed, this also puts an end to the Horsemen of the Apocalypse.[20]

Seventh Trumpet

As Sika Madu cries out that if Yu and demon Mika merge any further and they will notice, three seraphs enter the skies above them. Each armed with a trumpet[21], tonal sounds involving musical notes are emitted. Communicating in speech, the seraphs speak how the sinner is found. Repeating this line along with their musical tones, the seraphs mention that the great sinner who defied holy law to revive the cursed child had brought blight upon the entire world has been found. A long black spear, shimmering in a fiery like light is formed before a seraph's outstretched hand. Announcing that sinners must be executed on sight, the seraphs add they should execute the fallen angel.[22]

Firing into Sika Madu, their electrically charged missiles strike the First's barrier that he raises.[23] Unresponsive to chains pulling Sika Madu away, the seraphs float in the sky with their trumpets generating sounds above Yu with demon Mika as a sword.[24]

The three seraphs remain with their trumpets blowing[25] but do nothing else even with Mika getting his memories back[26], neither when Yu and Kimizuki with Yoichi speak amongst themselves.[27] Where they discuss what they are, the seraphs do not speak to them even though they are inside Yu's heart.[28]

While their trumpets are no longer active, two seraphs are considered by Mika as he leaves with Yu for the physical world.[29] Three seraphs are visualized when Mika is discussing how breaking a taboo will result in divine retribution, where the seraph of the end is a weapon that controls that.[30] Similarly, two seraphs are envisioned when Saito is discussing what Shikama Doji is, and how resurrecting either a demon or seraph would constitute a price so large that other seraphs would likely punish the attempt.[31]

Mentioned, they factor into Saito's decision to prevent the First from attempting to resurrect his son Mikaela, as seraphs may bring ruin to the world again.[32]
