Basteya Irclu (バステア・イルクル Basutea Irukuru?) is a Sixth Progenitor among the vampires in the Seraph of the End series. They took part in the invasion of Shibuya and was tasked with initiating the plan to capture the first progenitor. Upon the conquest of Shibuya, they lead Hyakuya Sect researchers in the project concerning Shikama Doji.

Appearance[]

Basteya is an androgynous vampire with medium length black hair that reaches down to their neck. Their bangs are uneven yet in any case the length on all sides leaves their ears and thin eyebrows visible. Like all true vampires, Basteya would have red eyes, along with fangs, and pointed ears.

They wear a white long coat with six buttons in the center,[3] two pairs of two lines on each side, and at the end of the long sleeves are dark cuffs with two white lines. Under the coat is a black collared dress shirt with white trim on both sides of the collar and a white tie.

The lower section of the coat is parted displaying white pants along with black boots that reach below their knees. Belt loops hold a black belt keeping the coat around their waist to which their sword scabbard is attached to.[4]

Personality[]

Basteya would attack when a foe was distracted, slashing at Shinya with his back turned and a second time when Shinya called to Kureto, smirking as he done so and wasted no time in trying to finish a fight. They were haughty to those perceived as beneath them referring to Ferid as a "little stray mutt" and not answering his question, it was none of Ferid's business on account that he had been discarded. Ferid considered him awfully stuck up for a dog that's still chained.

Basteya, in turn, has displayed immense loyalty to Rigr Stafford and has displayed little to no fear or hesitance in willingly allowing him to absorb and feed off his own life force in order to further boost his own in order to Battle the First Progenitor, showing absolute faith in his plans and abilities. Basteya has also shown a level of closeness to him, as seen where he still refers to him by his original name rather than his new alias as Saitō with the Second Progenitor in turn seemingly not minding at all despite his preference for his new name.

Overall, Basteya was remarkably calm in dangerous situations such as nonchalantly deflecting Ferid's ambush from behind whilst they were still talking. Additionally, Basteya was not remotely concerned about the arrival of Guren's squad armed with weapons, neither the sudden appearance of their human ally who appeared suddenly via a portal.

If the Demon Army has any promising researchers, add them to the Hyakuya Sect. Everything we've fought for over the last thousand years was for this moment.

–Incorporating defeated members of the army that was just overcome in remaining committed to a long-held plan. Chapter 121: "Last Dawn" Page 34

Events of 2020[]

Shibuya Arc[]

During Saitō's attack on Shibuya, Basteya appears atop the wall sword drawn behind Shinya. Fast, they attack him at once by slicing and seizes a second chance to do so when Shinya informs Kureto that there is vampire nobility.[5]

Cutting into the wall as Shinya evades the stroke, Basteya asks does Shinya really have time to talk. Their raised sword is clanged and they are surprised to see Crowley behind them and returns his question of why he is here. Basteya assumes that Crowley is running some errand for that little stray mutt Ferid Bathory just as Basteya blocks Ferid's sword itself when he attacks them from behind. They are asked if Saitō is also here though Basteya questions what business it is of Ferids, telling him bluntly that he was discarded. Basteya glances down when Ferid asks if he should cut his leash, stating that he cannot, Basteya is a sixth progenitor and points out that Ferid is a seventh.[6]

As they listen to Ferid explain that he has human allies now, as Sayuri, Shigure, Goshi and Mito arrive, Basteya remarks that they do not have enough interest in humans to form an opinion of them either way. That, and they did not set this plan in motion, simply playing a part before revealing that Lord Rigr Stafford is the one in complete control.[7]

Basteya keeps their gaze fixed ahead as a Hyakuya Sect agent appears behind him by slicing a portal through the air, turning their head Basteya departs through it not taking part further in this battle.[3]

Alongside an accomplice, Basteya smashes into the room behind the first progenitor who is possessing Shinoa's body. Basteya shouts that they will begin the prepared unification spell at Lord Rigr's command. Given the go ahead, Basteya produces a spell tag with the order to begin the ritual spell.[8] The process involves using Saito's chains to sap his entire armies strength which renders Basteya unconscious on the ground.[9]

Their efforts had helped to allow Saito to challenge the First in Shinoa's body by drawing on the power of what resembled beasts of the apocalypse. After the First had been sealed, yet with Saito's body exploded with a sinful key, the Hyakuya Sect were to retreat, yet ordered captured by Kureto leading the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. Where Basteya was left unconscious within a location where a seraph was kept, it transpires they had endured.

Mount Fuji Arc[]

The Hyakuya Sect invasion that Basteya took part in had failed to outright defeat the Demon Army and conquer Shibuya, and yet it had weakened it enough for the vampire progenitor council led by Urd to take when they arrived in the aftermath of the war. Where Urd agreed to hear out Saito's plan, they had succeded in capturing Shikama Doji in a second attempt. With the First imprisoned, he is brought to a location where Basteya is located.

Within a building of Shibuya, of which the Hyakuya Sect now operates in the Demon Army capital, Basteya holds a clipboard as they discuss progress on defensive sigils with other Hyakuya Sect members. Spell circles have been drawn on the floor of a large spacious room where the cage containing the First is kept. After checking and hearing that progress on one area of the defensive sigil is complete, Basteya requests an update from another group tasked with a different area.[10]

Upon hearing that they are ready, Basteya speaks to a human near them and says to remember the one they are fighting as a research subject is a god. Speaking that it will be quite the battle, Basteya cautions that any mistake will get all of them killed, and that failure is not an option.

Remember. The one we're fighting as a research subject is a god. It will be quite the battle. Any mistake will get all of us killed. Failure is not an option.

–Aware of the plans for Shikama Doji and overseeing others in preparation for them. Chapter 121: "Last Dawn" page 34

If the Demon Army has any promising researchers, Basteya directs for them to be added to the Hyakuya Sect. Everything they have fought for over the last thousand years was for this moment, and Basteya expects their best effort. Turning, Basteya pays no mind to the other second progenitor, Urd Geales nearby if they do even notice him, but is attentive to the spell circles emitting light. Speaking to Lord Rigr, it is relayed that the defensive sigils are complete.[11]

When Yu arrives at the Demon Army headquarters, Basteya is one of the four members with Saito in the room to receive him. Standing beside Ky Luc, they observe as Yu enters the room.[12][13] While not seen, Basteya would have almost certainly been observing Ky Luc as he fought Yu who was regarded as an abnormal human. Additionally, Basteya would have likely heard Shikama Doji's voice in their head as he communicated with Yu to come to him. On Saito's order, Basteya may have joined the other vampires in seeking to prevent Yu from reaching the First where they would be outside before him and Mika.

Powers and Abilities[]

Natural abilities[]

As a vampire, Basteya is naturally far stronger and more powerful than a human. This means that they also have immortality, immense strength, eternal youth and rapid regeneration if injured. As a vampire noble, they would have the ability and permission to turn humans into vampires.

Being a sixth progenitor, Basteya is incredibly strong even among noble vampires and stronger than those of lower ranking vampire seen firsthand when Ferid assailed them, who was effortlessly blocked.

From leading Hyakuya Sect researchers, it is possible that Basteya has a scientific based background. They are meticulous when it comes to ensuring that minute details are paid attention to.

Equipment[]

  • A thin sword with a slightly curved ending point to which the central ridge was close to the end. The pommel was somewhat pointed, the cross-guard was relatively short and the dark colored handle grip was long enough to be held with two hands though Basteya could wield the sword with one hand as well.
  • Spell tags were used in a plan to allow Saitō to draw upon his armies strength by using his chains to pierce them.

Hmph! Some errand or another for that little stray mutt, Ferid Bathory, I'm sure.

–Answering their own question to Crowley on why he is here in Shibuya. Chapter 80: "Lightning over Shibuya"

I don't have enough interest in humans to form an opinion of them either way. I didn't set this plan in motion. I simply play my part. The one in complete control is, and always has been... Lord Rígr Stafford.
