"His Dreams" (彼のユメ Kare no Yume?) is the one hundred and forty-third chapter of the Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign manga series, written by Takaya Kagami and illustrated by Yamato Yamamoto.
Synopsis[]
Shinoa displays her ability to break Ky Luc, who then means to turn him into a cursed gear and steal his memories. Remembering his mother, Ky Luc asked her what happens after he survives. His mother said it did not matter and to just keep living. Ky Luc recalls that Urd said he wanted to die as humans do. As Urd and Ky Luc spoke, children appearing like Yu, Mika and Shinoa Squad were seen in the past.
Presently, Ky Luc is half demon. Shinoa intends to make Ky Luc into a black demon cursed gear for Mitsuba. As Ky Luc calls for his mother, Shinoa cries to Mitsuba that she is not okay with this. Embracing her, Mitsuba supports Shinoa, as does Yoichi and Kimizuki.
After Ky Luc disappears to become cursed gear, Urd appears to sense something. From his memories, Shinoa knows what Urd and Rigr are thinking. She has also learned where Yu is.

Summary[]
The fires in Shibuya continue to burn as Ky Luc shouts that he will kill all of Shinoa Squad. Ordering him to not move, Shinoa speaks for Ky Luc to break. As his body does as it was compelled to do, Ky Luc wonders how a mere human like Shinoa can do this. As Yoichi remarks that is incredible, Mitsuba also comments on how Shinoa is more powerful than who is supposed to be a super-strong vampire.[1]
Clarifying the matter, Shinoa claims she could not hope to keep up with Ky Luc head on. She only pulled this off since she had time to weave one of the First's spells and cast it on him. Hearing this, Ky Luc wonders what is going on.[2]
Ordering Yoichi and Mitsuba to quit bothering her, Kimizuki is conscious that they do not have any time, especially if Ky Luc is more powerful than Shinoa. He is also wary of Ferid and Guren being in the vicinity. Announcing what she has in mind, Shinoa raises turning Ky Luc into cursed gear, and also stealing all his memories.[3]
Registering that cursed gear was mentioned, Ky Luc then beholds the manifestation of Shikama Doji appear above Shinoa. After Ky Luc assumes that Shinoa must be the First, it is imparted that Shinoa is a human who consumed the First. Rather than elaborate further, Shinoa adds now she is going to swallow Ky Luc.[4]
Raised in the air with his limbs still bound by shadows, Ky Luc thinks he has to get away. As Ky Luc attempts to invoke his sword, Shinoa has Shikama Doji's scythes slice his arms off. When Shinoa grasps Ky Luc's neck, he attempts to have them talk about this. After Shinoa sees no particular reason to do so, Ky Luc states he cannot afford to become a demon and adds that he has a dream.[5]
To this, Shinoa questions in all of Ky Luc's long centuries of life, how many humans have said exactly that to him before he killed them. Continuing that now it is Ky Luc's turn to be on the other end, Shinoa directs him to give up and let himself become a demon. The process ongoing, Ky Luc damns the humans and shouts he will kill them all. Ky Luc wonders is this where he loses.[6]
His mother's words are remembered, Ky Luc's mother urged him to survive and become stronger than anyone. As a child kneeling by her bedside, Ky Luc asked his mother what then. For what happens after he survives, Ky Luc's mother said to not worry about that and it did not matter. She said for her son to keep living no matter what.[7]
That Urd said he wanted to die is recalled. At the time when Ky Luc heard that was Urd's dream, he addressed how vampires were not capable of dying. Should they be drained of blood and become demons without consciousness, Ky Luc questioned whether that counted as death. Feeling it didn't, Urd's dream was to die as humans do, a death no meaning behind it.[8]
When Urd brought up how Ky Luc's desire to become stronger gave him reason to live, he wondered why do so in the first place. After Ky Luc answered that it was because mother told him he has to be strong to survive, Urd responded; survive and do what. Noting that Ky Luc had survived in this world for millennia, Urd questioned what had that made him. Not knowing yet, it was why Ky Luc was following Urd, or at least he thought it was.[9]
Having observed humans for millennia, Urd came to the realization in his words that humans live so they can die. As Ky Luc and Urd spoke, there were children running past which resembled Shinoa, then Yu and Mika as well. Children appearing like Mitsuba and Yoichi were also there. On how humans died, Urd felt that was what made their lives shine so brightly.[10]
Ky Luc inoffensively stated he had no patience for complicated things, to which Urd replied for him to live for the rest of eternity and stop following them around then. Returning to the topic, Ky Luc asked Urd if there was any way for them to become human again. Urd said they would have to if they are to die. Where Ky Luc was unsure how since the First vanished, Urd responded it was his dream, of which dreams are something to chase whether they are possible or not.[11]
While the First and Rigr left, Urd affirms he is not like them. Determined to find a way to return vampires' humanity, Urd sought what he called the grace of meaningless deaths. From this exchange, Ky Luc contemplated how mother told him not to die, which was akin to being bound by a curse for so long. Ky Luc asked Urd if other vampires knew about this. Answering no, Urd decided they would not understand.[12]
For why he was telling him, Ky Luc heard Urd say it was because for five hundred years he has looked at him like he wanted to know. Laughing, Ky Luc thought that day his mother's curse was finally broken. Resuming following him, Ky Luc said that his dream was to make Urd's dream come true.[13]
Presently, Ky Luc remains suspended as he screams how he refuses to become a demon. Keeping him there, Shinoa discerns that Ky Luc is already more than half demon. Shinoa also finds his memories are flowing into her. A demon horn appears on Ky Luc's head as he shouts to Lord Urd.[14]
Looking to Mitsuba close by, Shinoa says she will make Ky Luc into a black demon cursed gear for her to use. As smoke is emitted from his mouth, Ky Luc finds he cannot see. Ky Luc asks his mother where is she. Mitsuba checks if Shinoa is okay. Her tears the answer, Shinoa speaks she is not. The human side is sad too.[15]
Hugging her, Mitsuba tells Shinoa it is okay and they will do it together. Ky Luc's words concern not ending here and having to become stronger. Yoichi and Kimizuki join Shinoa at her side. Bidding farewell to him, Shinoa declares Ky Luc's fate is to become a piece of desire-devouring cursed gear.[16]
A second demon horn appears on Ky Luc who is now unresponsive. Stating that she is sorry, Shinoa says she has to make him a demon. As Ky Luc breaks away his final words are an apology to Lord Urd. A spiral of blackened energy forms above Shinoa.[17]
Stood alone elsewhere, Urd seems to detect something. As Shinoa stands, Mitsuba asks if she is okay. Happy, Shinoa shares she did it and produces the new black demon cursed gear for Mitsuba. Also, Shinoa reveals that she knows what Urd Geales is thinking now, and Rigr Stafford as well.[18]
Most importantly in Shinoa's view, is that she knows where Yu is. Powers resembling the three spells are visualized. Yu turns to something he feels.[19]

The feature image for chapter 142 concerns in-universe events as the story is underway. It begins from the same point as the previous Chapter 142: "What's the Point?" ended off at. It is not common for the title to allude to a particular matter, but the "His Dreams" could refer to Urd's dreams which would be revealed here. It is also less likely but still possible that it is Ky Luc's dreams that he speaks about, though his would align with Urd's dream in any case.
- Shortly after the release of chapter 142, this chapter 143 had a scheduled release date of 1/01/2025 before being updated to be released on the 1/10/2025 on both MANGA Plus and VIZ Media.
- Fires continue to burn in Shibuya after the city came under attack by the Hyakuya Sect which began in Chapter 80: "Lightning over Shibuya". The invasion was repelled in Chapter 91: "Orphan Prince". The chapters since concern Shinoa Squad escaping the city and Yu helping Mika become himself as a demon after he was changed into one without memories. In Chapter 118: "I Hear Voices", Yu and Mika would then leave to seclude themselves near Mt. Fuji and delve into memories of the past involving Shikama Doji. During Chapter 131: "Exoneration for Everyone" Yu and Mika would return to Shibuya, which evidently was left to burn when the vampire progenitors led by Urd arrived to effectively conquer the city. A large number of around sixty chapters did not concern a large amount of in-universe time (but still a long time to keep buildings burning).
- Further telekinetic abilities are displayed by Shinoa with her increased demonic capabilities. In Chapter 83: "Two Demons", Guren as a demon also wielded a crushing based power. Such an ability seems something that stronger demons can utilize.
- Wondering who this is, Ky Luc evidently does not remember that he came into contact with Shinoa and her squad when he first sensed them in Chapter 59: "Who Is Your Owner?". He guessed they were distracting him as they fought in Chapter 60: "Surrounding Ky Luc" as he attempted to guard Krul and Ferid as prisoners. Although attentive to their plans, Ky Luc did not remember the specific members involved.
- Shinoa is upfront that she does not feel capable of battling Ky Luc directly. Regardless, Shinoa is able to snare a fifth progenitor by ambushing him with one of the First's spells that she gained in Chapter 136: "The Godtouched", and demonstrated in Chapter 139: "The Queen's Time".
- While Ferid and Guren were nearby to them in Chapter 139, Kimizuki would not know that they left to rendezvous with Shinya and Guren's squad which took place in the previous chapter. As it happens, Ky Luc was falling back from the fight against Ferid, Guren, and Mahiru to alert Urd to them. Shinoa squad happened across Ky Luc during that retreat and caught him.
- Because Shinoa squad succeeded in incapacitating Ky Luc, the news of Ferid's enhanced power that he has acquired by absorbing vampires would not be learned of by Urd. Consequently, the second progenitors namely Urd and Saito remain unaware that Ferid can overcome stronger vampires. Guren's group and their plan which relies on secrecy retains that because of Shinoa squad helping them without knowing it. That might be bad news for the second progenitors. Good news for Guren and Ferid. Good and bad news for Shinoa squad. While Shinoa has affirmed her squad as a distinct group, they would still likely align themselves with Guren when necessary, though rightfully remain suspicious of the overall plans concerning them.
- Resorting to Shikama Doji's powers, Shinoa is able to form cursed gear on the spot.
- The manifestation of the cursed gear that Shinoa calls Shi has been seen, yet the visage of Shikama Doji himself appears, apparently still functioning as a visual indication that a power is being generated.
- In seeing it, Ky Luc thinks that Shinoa is Shikama Doji, where he was unaware he was absorbed. He would learn that fact here when Shinoa reveals she is the one who ate the First whole. (Technically it wasn't entirely whole, Yu had gained a third of Shikama Doji's powers).
- Ky Luc appears able to begin to form his weapon as his hands are bound by the shadows restraining him. Shinoa's recourse to this is to have his arms severed.
- Captured and unable to escape, Ky Luc attempts dialogue which Shinoa is not interested in.
- Not wanting to turn into a demon, Ky Luc's dream he mentions is to help Urd find a way for vampires to die. Not the reality if he is a demon, it is a death as humans experience that he is after.
- The process of a cursed gear being formed is depicted in this chapter. An initial barrier like impact appears to be a part of it, of which it is a gradual process of a vampire slowly becoming more demon like. For the vampire who is to become a demon, their eyes change and smoke appears out their mouth as if they are burning from the inside. A lightning circular like power floats round the vampire as the process is underway. The loss of vision is also a feature. After the vampire disappears into fragmented light, a towering spiral of dark jagged energy is seen.
- When Lest Karr tore out Ferid's heart in Chapter 50: "Brothers in Blood", there were curse marks appearing across Ferid as he was in the process of becoming a demon after blood loss. Becoming a demon, and one bound to cursed gear may be a different process as shown here.
- Remembered in Chapter 141: "A Reason Not to Die", Ky Luc's Mother is thought of again.
- As Urd was constructing vampire cities during over centuries he also had a dream about wanting to die. The ongoing desire for death seems a vampire apathy based trait.
- In sharing that he had a dream, it would seem that it was a later occurrence where Urd shared with Ky Luc what is specifically was based on the pavement and the time of day.
- During what would have almost certainly been eighteenth-century Europe, as Urd and Ky Luc spoke there were children resembling those of the modern era around them. This is an occurrence of a past Shinoa, Mitsuba, and Yoichi existing. Given their connection, it is likely Kimizuki would have also been around, just not seen here.
- In Chapter 134: "Reincarnation Rondo", Ferid accepted that reincarnation as a concept was real, however that is Ferid. For past beings there is Mikaela and a homunculus named Yu of which the present day Yu and Mika can access what are felt to be their memories. For potential experiences across different life times, in Chapter 130: "The Light Which Remains" Yu and Mika affirm that they are who they are now and regard these 'memories' as the those of others to look into and not their own.
- Where vampires generally have few interests aside from blood, Urd has been observing humans over time. Urd is of the view that humans die is what makes their lives shine so brightly. He seeks what humans supposedly have, and would like to have that for all vampires as well.
- Resolving to turn Ky Luc into black demon cursed gear, Shinoa has the idea for Mitsuba to use that. Yoichi and Kimizuki already have black demons, Gekkouin and Kiseki-o respectively. Then, Shinoa and Mitsuba have a different type of bond which was recently explored in Chapter 133: "Maidens in Love".
- For the process of Ky Luc turning into a demon, the squad rally round Shinoa in support of her as she vanquishes a powerful foe who has killed so many and would remain a threat to them.
- Where he was with Saito to discuss Yu and Mika's plan, Urd has parted ways from them and stands by himself. He appears to sense something as Ky Luc is turned into cursed gear.
- The new cursed gear for Mitsuba resembles two severed and burnt appearing fingers.
- From absorbing Ky Luc's memories, Shinoa knows what Urd is thinking. Predominantly, Shinoa may see that Urd's goal is for vampires to die, and that he is aligned with Saito's plan. It would be what Ky Luc has learnt of Saito's plans that Shinoa would be aware of. Saito's background with Guren, Yu, and the Hyakuya Sect may remain unknown to her, but Shinoa may have an indication of Saito's interest in the First whose power she now has. Overall it is important details Shinoa has of two entities with the means to enact seismic goals, however on a personal level Shinoa values most the knowledge of where Yu is. Yu is in Shibuya with them after he and Mika returned to seek the vampire progenitors' help in gaining the sinful keys from Guren (which are held by Ferid). Shinoa may know of this since Ky Luc partially heard some details.
- Furthermore concerning memories, if the past recollections of the chapter were not a flashback, rather showing the memories Shinoa was accessing, then Shinoa might have learned of people in the past resembling themselves and so gain a concept of reincarnation possibly affecting them. (Ky Luc paid attention to these children so they were not added in the background solely for readers to see, rather Ky Luc saw them and now Shinoa knows of them through viewing his memories).
- If they were memories viewed by Shinoa she would be one of the few people to see someone as a human before they became a vampire. Shinoa's upset at Ky Luc calling for his mother would have been compounded for she saw a young child speaking with his ailing mother. Right now she is turning that someone into cursed gear.
