Homunculus are spherical eye like-being that exist in the Seraph of the End universe. Seen in the prehistoric past, many of them co-existed with seraphs within a colossal seraph civilization. None have been seen in present times. This changed in Chapter 152: "Guren Ichinose: Catastrophe at 16" where Shinoa was able to manifest a homunculus, which coincided with when she gained the First's powers in a possible indication of their origin.
Appearance[]
They appear as relatively large floating eyes roughly the size of a human's head. Spherical and solid-appearing, if all homunculi are physically alike then rather than being rigid they are able to be squeezed. Very dark in coloration, the exception to this is their singular large eye which takes up a section of their bodies. Both the pupil and iris are dark within the white sclera.
Personality[]
On their own and in groups with seraphs, the homunculi are calm as they head about where they are going. Where seraphs are seen more closer together in proximity, homunculus are one their lonesome more and do not travel in groups of other homunculus. Apparently capable of reading, homunculus don't display interest in the ice cream as the seraphs seen do.
Acting similar in the present time, a homunculus will remain simply observing a scenario without any response at all.
History[]
Many homunculus were seen floating throughout the towering buildings of a seraph civilisation that was present on Earth during the era of dinosaurs. They lived amongst seraphs who were the other distinct set of beings seen in this civilisation.[1] Levitating at many heights, some homunculi travelled by themselves and others were accompanying seraphs.[2] Various homunculi are seen as Yu and Mika head off to explore the seraph civilisation.[3] Some are around when ice cream is being discussed which was available during this time.[4]
Also fewer in number by the time night falls, there are homunculi outside the wall around the tower. Also present inside the wall around the Tower of Babel,[5] yet other members were within the seemingly restricted area of the inner tower. Homunculus were observed being transported up an elevator along with seraphs.[6]
Notably, despite their presence in the civilization, no homunculi at all were seen when a huge amount of seraphs were gathered to hear Sika Madu announce their satellite kingdom was nearing completion.[7]
Story[]
Discovered when Yu and Mika are accessing memories it is unlikely they would know they were being observed by humans from the far-future, less so when humans had not even evolved yet in the time they existed. One homunculus almost has Yu bump into it where physical contact can still be made within a memory. Another would have Mika hold onto it as a means of transportation while Mikaela was being followed. For wherever the homunculus was heading at the time, it unknowingly took Mika off course.[8]
It seems the case that Shinoa may have had a hand in enabling Yu and Mika to escape when they came under attack from Guren's group who were set on carrying out the resurrection. After Kureto, along with Mito then Sayuri and likely Goshi and Shigure as well had been left tied up, there was a homunculus monitoring them.[9]
Where Yu with Mika had rescued Saito, who retreated to a different building, a single homunculus also floated above them. The same one that could move, or a third one was also situated back where Guren with Mahiru then Shinya and Ferid were. From the homunculus' light opaque appearance, and that no one reacted to it, it appears the case that the homunculus could remain unseen by them. The vantage point the homunculus provided was used by Shinoa who could see what it could.[10]
The homunculus used by Shinoa was seemingly the first whole one seen in the present time, and is how Shinoa cold inform Yoichi, with Mitsuba, and Kimizuki as well that Guren's side had lost. From the homunculus remaining there, it seemed to allow Shinoa to view that Ferid had vanished to become a demon. As Mahiru shares her guilt at Shinya perishing in the fight against Saito, the homunculus continues to observe this scenario.[11]
Ever unseen by them, the homunculus enables Shinoa to witness Yu killing Guren as requested before he turns into a demon, in which it resulted in Shinoa concluding that she cannot leave this to Yu after he began crying over Guren's death.
Abilities[]
Capable of floating, homunculus can levitate as a means of transportation. If Yu the homunculus is anything to go by, they are capable of possessing living beings such as a lizard. To do this they can change the composition of their body to become more shadow like where they may be capable of possessing their host and affecting their actions.
If the homunculus Yu is anything to go by then their bodies are able to blow their way out of structures. They can also be fast enough to blast their way up into Space which they can survive in. Looking at a ring of light is enough to darken it completely. Shadowy tendrils can be generated from their bodies which can attach themselves to rings of darkness, which may factor into them being able to vastly increase their physical size.
A homunculus can act as a vantage point for another person. Both vampires, and people using demon power have shown the ability to cast their consciousness out to view what is in the physical area around them which they wouldn't see with their eyes, yet this reaching out can be sensed by others. A homunculus remains undetected, and operates as a hidden monitor, a system that is apparently able to observe multiple locations.

Trivia[]
- While homunculus are seen to have existed in the ancient past, none are seen in the present times when humans existed. Black suns resemble them. Arukanu is a dark, somewhat spherical entity with one eye that resembles them in these respects yet there may be no connection between those two.
- While one, then more were first seen in chapter 123, it would be in chapter 125 that these shadowy eyeball beings would have their species name revealed as a homunculus.
