"Looking Across the Sea" (海をナガメテ Umi o Nagamete?) is the one hundred and forty-seventh chapter of the Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign manga series, written by Takaya Kagami and illustrated by Yamato Yamamoto.
Synopsis[]
Guren and group members watch as Shinya fires a sinful key empowered Byakkomaru missile at both Saito and Urd. The light over head is seen by Shinoa squad. Urd stops attacking Saito and intends to use his sinful key to defend them. Saito uses his chain to slice Urd's arm off and acquire the sinful key to use against him. Pausing, Saito says he always loved Urd, before activating the sinful key. Witnessing this, Yu asks Mika what he thinks they are all alive for.
It is remembered how as human children that Rigr and Urd escaped across the sea. When Rigr asked Urd what the meaning to life was, Urd felt there wasn't one. When Rigr happily said for them to go find it, Urd's thoughts were that ending his suffering became his life's dream.
Presently, as Urd endures the blast, he means for him and Saito to meet their end here together. Saito stops Urd from stabbing him with the sinful key. Urd is vaporized from the effects of the light.
Ferid can sense that Urd has turned into a demon. The blast Shinya fired is deflected by Saito with the sinful key he took. Guren and his squad along with Kureto and Mahiru are ready to fight. They plan to collect the sinful keys and steal Mikaela back to restore humanity. Shinya gets ready to shoot Saito again.

Summary[]
While Shinya aims, his rifle emanates a light from the Sinful Key placed into it. As Guren details that they have already infused Byakkomaru with a Sinful Key, Shinya then alerts him that they have been spotted and he is going to shoot. Since Saito and Urd have noticed them, Guren shouts at Shinya to shoot.[1]
Speaking bang, Shinya launches a great stream of light towards their targets. The brightness of the Sinful Key infused Byakkomaru projectile causes Goshi to cover his eyes where Mito and Guren are surprised at it.[2]
On the ground, Mitsuba along with Kimizuki and Yoichi run through Shibuya. Noticing the emission of light above, Shinoa shouts for everyone to get down. Where Kimizuki appears unsure what is going on, Shinoa commands them to drop now. After doing so, the propulsion soars overhead where it has a wider force that impacts buildings around it. Looking up, Shinoa sees the beam soar ahead.[3]
Also seeing it travelling directly towards them, Saito appears unnerved where Urd registers this tremendous attack incoming. Speaking Urd's name but even in this perilous moment not finding him forthcoming, Urd then yells whether he is okay with the two of them getting vaporized without accomplishing anything. Darkly entertaining what he is to do, Urd damns it before acting. Ceasing his attempt to assail Saito, the Sinful Key that Urd holds is prepared for defensive measures against the power coming towards them.[4]
As Urd activates the Sinful Key to defend them both, he suddenly finds his arm seized by one of Saito's chains. Using his chain to slice Urd's arm off, Saito pulls his limb and the Sinful Key it holds to himself.[5]
While Urd is angered at Saito's betrayal in the midst of this already dire situation, he finds Saito does not waste a second in at once bringing the Sinful Key directly near his face. Looking straight ahead without a word, Urd remains impassive. On his part for what he done, Saito pauses. After realizing it now, Saito says that he always loved Urd. Finding his idea comical, Urd says to Saito he's a liar.[6]
Before Urd can complete what he was about to add what he has always felt, Saito activates the Sinful Key. The expanse of light envelops Urd.[7]
Witnessing this close by, Yu sits as he registers what is taking place. The light nearing him, Yu has something to speak about with Mika. Sat within the light, Yu questions Mika what does he think vampires, before adjusting this to ask what does he think humans, all of them are alive for. Looking to him, Mika raises if Yu is really bringing that up now as destruction occurs around them.[8]
A past recollection shows Rigr and Urd as human children reaching the shore. Triumphant, Rigr said to Urd that they did it, they got away. In response, Urd questioned but what is the point to living now. Addressing how they were kids, Urd wondered how they were going to survive in the wild, they did not even have anything to eat.[9]
Ever jubilant, Rigr felt they did. Announcing that they could fish, Rigr stated that the ocean was huge and it had food. Once Urd raised how since they didn't have any tools, Rigr joked he was depressing and there was no point to being gloomy now. For that, Urd replied there was also no reason to being cheery.[10]
Regarding the sea and taking into account the impracticality of fishing from it, Urd and Rigr then found their stomachs rumbling. While Rigr was pleased to see it as it meant he was alive, Urd was unsure what to make of this. Taking Urd's hand, Rigr was happy to say if they could not fish they would steal something. Rigr announced for him and Urd to find somewhere they could steal to survive.[11]
As Urd contemplated why bother with it all, Rigr was speaking how his old tutor taught him something. Rigr shared that his tutor said that the point of studying was to learn the meaning of life. Turning to him, Rigr asked Urd what was the meaning of life. Surprised to find himself asked this, Urd gave the matter some thought before firmly responding that there wasn't one, at least he did not think so anyway.[12]
Where Rigr was not happy with Urd's answer, he then wondered but what if there was one. Urd felt it was no business of theirs. Upbeat once again, Rigr said for them to find it which Urd registered. When Urd raised what if the meaning of life was hunting for the meaning of life, Rigr was having none of it.[13]
Determined, Rigr stated to Urd for them to try their hardest to find it, together. Reflecting on his expressiveness here, Urd would consider that even back then he thought he idolized Rigr. His thoughts concerning how there could not be any meaning to life, Urd considered that Rigr never gave up looking. In seeing Rigr grinning happily, for that Urd eventually came to think that ending his suffering became his life's dream.[14]
Presently, within the orb of light, Urd's lower body has been destroyed by the Sinful Key that Saito holds before him. Shouting Rigr's name, Urd means for both of them to meet their end together. When Urd attempts to strike at him however, Rigr has the reflexes to grab his arm.[15]
As parts of Urd's face begin to burn away, his anger seems based on being unable to end Saito as well. Vaporizing into mist, Urd damns it all. Reserving a final glare for Saito, he is calmed in thinking that he is becoming a demon.[16]
On Saito's part, he appears to use the Sinful Key to have Urd materialize again briefly. In this moment, Urd can speak that he is sorry, but he is going ahead. In response, Saito says for him not to worry and he will be by his side again soon.[17]
A detonation of thin spiral-like light breaks into the sky above. Floating in the air, Saito speaks of Ferid who he turned into a vampire, and Guren who he built out of his DNA. Not forgetting the incoming Sinful Key formed beam of light that Shinya fired, Saito finds that reaching him. For Ferid and Guren acting against him that he has in mind, Saito wonders which one of them will find meaning first.[18]
Having a wild look on his face, Saito yells for the sons of his to make it a contest. In the Shibuya Underground Shrine the activities above have been sensed by Ferid. Amazed, Ferid perceives that Urd has turned into a demon. Then darning it, Ferid speaks how he wanted to devour Urd before he fought Saito.[19]
With the capabilities to overcome Urd and vanquish another second progenitor in the rapid time it takes for the sniper beam to reach him, Saito is ready to use the Sinful Key he took to repel the energy. Viewing this, Shinya is surprised that Saito swatted it back before asking Guren now what. When Guren jabs a needle into Shinya for curse marks to appear across his face, he claims he is giving him another shot and adds they still have Sinful Keys.[20]
The affront to Shinya addressed by Goshi, he shouts at Guren since too much of the shot is problematic. For this, Guren shouts they do this like they are about to die anyway. Mito sees the gravity of what is at stake, and Sayuri has an understanding of their situation. Shigure and Kureto listen, before Mahiru hears what Guren has to add.[21]
Asking if they remember eight years ago on the day the world ended, Guren speaks how back then they were still kids. Recalling how they were teenagers in school together, Guren felt they could not do anything. Recalling how they were running through a forest, Guren voices that they were powerless, and because they were lost, they lost everything.[22]
Remembering his own anguish, Guren speaks how for them time stopped that say. As Sayuri and Kureto listen, Guren places a shot into his own neck. While curse marks cover his face, Guren details how they are not kids anymore and for them to win this even if it kills them. Motioning to Guren for a shot of his own, Kureto is ready to act.[23]
Sharing how he read the reports, Kureto summarizes his understanding that they are to collect the Sinful Keys, and steal Mikaela back. Kureto questions if they can pull that off then can they can bring back all of humanity. Although Guren answers that he has no proof, Mahiru is ready to confirm that they can. Happy to swear it, Mahiru says for them to trust her. Mahiru adds unlike them she is the genius, which Shinya with Kureto and Guren grimace at.[24]
At ease with the plan at hand, Goshi says how he guesses they just have to do it. Sayuri informs Lord Guren that she will follow him anywhere, as will Shigure. In her own thoughts, Mito then warmly speaks for them to win this. Mentioning then they will go and play some pointless video game after, Mito asks how about that.[25]
Quite pleased with this suggestion, Guren replies they should indeed do that, together. Light-heartedly, Guren adds if they all survive. Sayuri and Shigure ready themselves. Shinya takes aim through his sniper.[26]
The lone figure within view is Saito who stands with his Sinful Key ready. Alerting them that he is going to shoot, Shinya reports that Saito looks like he is getting ready to counter. Ordering him to shoot then, Guren proclaims this is their final battle and for them to get it started.[27]
Guren stands by as Shinya blasts a second Sinful Key bolstered shot.[28]

Chapter Notes[]
Cover Details[]
The feature image for Chapter 147 is a feature images. This is a rare case of two pages having the lettering and title details for a chapter. As a double page, in which story events are covering two pages rather than one, the details follow accordingly. The chapter number and title is one the first pages to be read, the series logo on the second. It is a double page on account of Shinya's Sinful Key bolstered rifle rifle blasting wide across the cityscape. Also rarely, the lower section splits to become single pages each.
- This chapter shows that Sinful Keys can be used to empower Cursed Gear weapons. The great burst of light emitted from Shinya's Byakkomaru rifle was in mind for destroying two second progenitor vampires. Based on the light of a Sinful Key, there's little reason to doubt it could have done this were in not for the defensive properties of a counterpart Sinful Key.
- Since gaining Ky Luc as a cursed gear weapon for Mitsuba in Chapter 143: "His Dreams", Shinoa Squad are active again in Shibuya.
- Shinoa squad have physically last seen Yu in Chapter 120: "The Price of Appetite" after they failed to prevent him and Mika escaping by themselves. Based on where they were running with the trajectory of the beam above them, it would appear Shinoa squad were heading towards Yu, where Shinoa reported she had learned his location in Chapter 143.
- Where Urd was set on attacking Yu in the previous Chapter 146: "The Promise They Made" and spoke of ending himself and Saito, he relents in resorting to defend themselves against this common foe of humans at Saito's urging. A ruse by Saito, as soon as Urd turns, Saito cuts Urd's arm off to seize the Sinful Key that was to be used against himself, and turns it on Urd.
- While Saito paused with the Sinful key against Urd to speak that he loved him, it was "loved" in the past tense, and his gaze was down in a further indication that he meant to murder Urd.
- For Saito's claim of love for Urd, as a child he felt a connection to him right away yet it was in the context of wanting them to escape together. As this chapter shows, Rigr was ever happy to find the meaning of life with Urd. During the events of Chapter 105: "Saito and Urd" they lived in Romania together, where Rigr's affections involved losing to Urd on purpose in previous fights since he liked how happy this made him, yet that was a turning point for there Rigr would leave Urd, abandon a dream of forming a vampire utopia, and instead disappear to chase the First. Modifications to his own body, and running the Hyakuya Sect for his own purposes left any fondness for Urd long in the past. Seeing one another after ages in Chapter 50: "Brothers in Blood", Saito absconded as ever in resuming his own quest involving the First. Even after working together as of Chapter 106: "I Am Your..." it became an arrangement of Saito having Urd serve him as with other vampires. Saito seated by himself on a throne with Urd next to him in Chapter 131: "Exoneration for Everyone" said it all. Saito having no interest in Urd's goals, and only seeking his help for matters to concerning the First, to outright commanding him in the previous Chapter 146 severed the connection. Saito would utterly cut it away for Urd was willing to turn back and defend them, however Saito eliminated someone who was at that point in his mind may have been an obstacle to his plans. Saito's own Sika Madu related goals took priority over Urd as someone he was fond of long ago.
- On Urd's part, it would transpire he was looking at Saito's joy and enthusiasm as something to end for his own perceived good. This casts Urd's sorrow that Ky Luc saw in Chapter 142: "What's the Point?" in a different light. Given this, it might be said that Urd was not upset about Saito having disappeared as may have been assumed, rather that Urd was upset that Saito was out there 'suffering' in his search for meaning to life where Urd felt there wasn't any. For Urd's dream of seeking to find a permanent death for vampires, it was not for himself, but for Saito.
- The medical staff who assisted with the nutrition for Yu are absent, which spared them the ramifications of being involved in a battle between Saito and Urd where a Sinful Key was involved.
- A flashback scene shows Rigr and Urd as children escaping, where they seemingly made it to the coast. While they would get to enjoy freedom, as young adults Rigr and Urd would be found in a prison cell in Chapter 114: "Everyone's Goals" yet it would be where Sika Madu would offer them eternal life.
- From a tutor mentioned, Rigr refers to an earliest part in his life where he was a noble before being reduced to a slave.
- Where Rigr's tutor told him the point of studying was the learn the meaning of life, it resulted in Rigr wanting him and Urd to find that. This desire would eventually have Urd make it his life goal to end Rigr's dream since there could be no meaning to life in his view. It would be a goal of Urd's sustained over centuries to this point in the present day which may have factored in him working to end Saito.
- Close contact with a Sinful Key has once again removed the lower half of an entity. In Chapter 91: "Orphan Prince" Saito's lower torso was sundered, and here with the light effects the same serious effect has struck Urd and left him dismembered.
- Unlike Saito who endured just the physical contact of a Sinful Key in Chapter 84: "Nativity of a Princess" and who could recover from it, for Urd it would appear as though the ongoing searing light is what burnt him entirely away.
- Upon his demise as a vampire, Urd is calm in realizing that he is becoming a demon. It may be the case that Urd will return and be seen as the first second progenitor demon.
- For the recent vampire progenitors that have met their end in Shibuya, Urd is the only one who has been destroyed as a vampire to apparently become an unbounded demon. Others have been consumed by Ferid and bound within him. Third progenitor Krul was brought to the tree within Ferid in Chapter 138: "Really for Real". Ky Luc was turned into a demon, although confined to cursed gear by Shinoa in Chapter 143. Lest Karr was consumed by Ferid in the previous Chapter 146.
- A single Sinful Key based power, a collective beam of energy fired from a Cursed Gear sniper rifle and one of Byakkomaru's power is unable to to breach the defences of the Sinful Key barrier that Saito generated. It is not likely that an individual may be able to influence the strength generated from a Sinful Key, the powers emitted will be devastating regardless of who is using one, thus it may be the case that the range of these powers factored into how effective each was. An outpouring of energy may have lost some capacity as it travelled, and when it came into contact with a defensive shield newly formed in the moment.
- For Saito's conflicted feelings, it's unclear how genuine he is in saying that he will be by Urd's side again soon. He may see his goal coming close to completion so can move on, or indicate he does not mean to suffer being consumed by Ferid so will become a demon as well if he sees his defeat is at hand. Where Saito manipulates a Sinful Key, it may be the case he may be able to bind Urd as a demon, to once again use. The spiral of white energy is a similar shape to the dark spiral of energy when Ky Luc was turned into Cursed Gear. Binding Urd to the Sinful Key or some object is not an outlandish possibility. It would also not be out of character for Saito given his track record of using others given his experiments such as those seen throughout Chapter 145: "A Philosophical Philosopher" more so since he has already been seen as being comfortable using Urd for his own goals.
- From his comment, Ferid was planning to devour Urd and save defeating Saito for last.
- Aware that Ferid and Guren are acting against him, Saito considers how he shaped them both. For Guren, he speaks of building him out of his own DNA.
- The flashbacks of Guren and his squad as teenagers are events explored in the Seraph of the End: Guren Ichinose: Catastrophe at Sixteen prequel manga. Mito along with Goshi, then Shinya with Guren, plus Shigure and Sayuri are remembered as teenagers in this Vampire Reign manga.
- For Guren asking if they remember eight years ago when the world ended, his squad wouldn't for they perished. As discussed in Chapter 47: "Prayer's Price" details of someone being resurrected cannot be learned about otherwise they will perish again.
- As Kureto understands Guren's goal, for the matter of stealing Mikaela back, if they mean to capture Mika, they are all unaware they have the wrong target in mind. In Chapter 129: "The First Vampire" Yu and Mika learned through memories how the past Mikaela hid his spirit inside a youth who looked like Yu. Meanwhile, the the homunculus named Yu physically appeared as Mikaela's corpse. That was done so that Sika Madu could never resurrect Mikaela, for the corpse he sought to raise was the homunculus imitating it, while Mikaela's spirit was elsewhere. Mikaela and the homunculus named Yu sought to arrange their own resurrection plan to spare Sika Madu punishment from God. For here, Guren and his group also see Mika as the First's son due to his appearance and name, though this is not a physical matter, but a spirit one. The person they need is not Mika who looks like Mikaela, they need Yu for that is where Mikaela's spirit is hidden.
- Mahiru alone feels certain that collecting the Sinful Keys and stealing Mikaela back is what is needed to bring all humanity back. She is right, so long as Mahiru now understands that Mikaela's essence within Yu is what needs to be regained. There's no indication she does, however. Then Mahiru and Guren are still operating on the belief that Mika will need to be sacrificed, which Yu did not react well to when he left them all for Mika's sake in Chapter 118: "I Hear Voices".
- While Guren's squad may not know the specifics of this resurrection plan, they are all committed to helping Guren enact it.
- Without Urd, and the third progenitors Lest Karr and Ky Luc around, Saito is the strongest vampire remaining.
