Makoto Narumi (鳴海 真琴 Narumi Makoto?) is a character in the Seraph of the End series, featured in the Seraph of the End: Guren Ichinose: Catastrophe at Sixteen and Resurrection at Nineteen prequel novels. He is also present in the Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign manga series. Narumi is a sergeant of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, where he serves under the Moon Demon Company branch.

The leader of a squad of five, Narumi is tasked with fighting against Vampires who have essentially enslaved humans as livestock. Wielding the Cursed Gear trident, Genbushin, he is aware of the harsh realities humanity finds itself in yet remains committed to fighting in their favor, such as with others like Shinoa Squad.

After his squad are murdered by vampires, and the army he serves, Narumi deserts them all with Shinoa squad. Resolving to defend them, Narumi shares his views on their state. After Shibuya came under attack by the Hyakuya Sect, Narumi was separated from them amongst the chaos.

Note: This is the page for Narumi in the manga and light novels, for the anime article detailing Makoto see: Makoto Narumi (Anime).

Appearance[]

He has long brown hair that is pulled back into a ponytail, where his bangs frame his face and reach down to his jawline. Narumi has a beauty mark under the outer corner of his right eye. His eyes are brown and Narumi has heavy upper eyelids.

Narumi wears the standard Japanese Imperial Demon Army uniform. This consists of a long-sleeved black coat with light green details including the shoulder epaulettes, which has a brown Sam Browne belt along with another strap crossing over his chest. This forms an X design, and there are two rows of gold buttons on the front. Narumi has his sleeves rolled up. Along with that, he wears a pair of white gloves and a white web belt with a gold waist-plate. He also wears the uniform trousers and black boots which go over the trouser's leggings.

Personality[]

Making impressions quickly, Narumi does not take kindly to Shinoa and her squad being late for a gathering of Moon Demon Company squads, and speaks his squad's frustrations to Guren. Heading over to interact with them, Narumi introduces himself and claims it is good to meet them in a friendly manner, before squeezing Yu's hand tightly during their handshake. Speaking how this is the bratty kid who broke regulations, Narumi then shares his honesty how he might not trust Yu to have his back. Changing his tone somewhat at hearing Yu is twenty years of age, Narumi then moves to resume cordially introducing the rest of his squad.

Serious about army procedures, Narumi is also dissatisfied that Yu seems to have not read the mission briefing. Knowing how important and dangerous their missions are, Narumi acts to be prepared for operations at hand. Announcing that he is Yu's superior, Narumi turns to Shinoa to question what training he has. Supportive and professional, Narumi assures Shinoa that she does not need to apologize, they just need to do the requirements of the job.

Although stating that their squad will make the mission a success, Narumi does trust others in the moment. Working effectively as a team, Narumi is fine with having Yu go ahead to engage foes. He is ready to be on standby and support a collective effort in defeating a vampire noble. When questioned how they did, the chance was available to say anything he wanted, where Narumi praised Yu and the squad to Guren for their success.

Angered at the loss of squad members, Narumi had to be pulled away. In his intent to return and rescue Guren rather than continue a mission planned by the Hīragi Family, it took shouting for Narumi to return to focus where he was set on this path. Weary and frustrated, Narumi did not hold back a scathing critique of the army policy to Kureto Hīragi where in his upset he questioned whether they were all meant to be killed. For his righteous anger, Narumi was still able to defend himself and others, and ensure they could escape where he did not give into notions of revenge.

In considering their options, Narumi focuses on what is practical. Returning to the demon army was favored as it at least provided a possibility of dealing with Yu's demon situation. During this time he also acquired food items to support others, and in dealing with his squad's loss he focused on not having others die lest their murders be in vain. While others were patient with Mika, he spoke bluntly on what they were capable of doing. Replying he was not bullying him, Narumi raised how his words were not doing anything, and he was wary Mika was only thinking about running away his Yu.

On human experimentation and resurrection, possibly because these were activities the demon army were involved in, Narumi was of the opinion that such human greed could only give birth to hope. Pointing out they might succeed next time, Narumi adds after all humans developed in that manner.

Perceptive, Narumi paid attention to details such as a well-maintained manor which he considered was because of enslaved humans, or was a trap. Struck by a powerful foe, Narumi warned others about it before returning to the battle formation.

History[]

Narumi belongs to a retainer house that serves the Ichinoses. He had been friends Shūsaku Iwasaki since they were little. They went to the same preschool and the world ended when they were in elementary school together.

Both of them grew up in Nagoya before the apocalypse which made for a dangerous journey North to Shibuya. Sometime during their journey, they rescued their future squad members Rika, along with Yayoi and Tarō. They then joined the Japanese Imperial Demon Army and later the Moon Demon Company, where Narumi became the leader of their squad. They were selected to take part in the one hundred member gathering of Moon Demon Company soldiers targeting vampire nobles.

Nagoya Arc[]

Makoto Narumi and his squad have been combined with Shinoa Squad at the Ebina rest stop in a mission to exterminate vampire nobles in Nagoya. Introducing himself to Yūichirō Hyakuya, he shares his doubts about a bratty kid watching his back. When Makoto tells Yu he is nineteen, and surprised at his response, he believes Yu's mentioned age of twenty. Afterwards, Makoto proceeds to introduce the rest of his squad.

When Shinoa Squad faces off against Lieutenant Colonel Guren Ichinose, with Colonel Mito Jūjō, and Major General Shinya Hīragi, he looks forward to the rookie hazing. Where it is surprising that Yu can hold off on his own against Guren, it is more so when Narumi hears that they are sixteen, and three of them bear Black Demons. Having realized Yu lied about his age, Narumi walks up to Guren to point out how their squad has no sense of teamwork.

Raising the issue of zero teamwork with Shinoa Squad, Narumi also addresses how they lied about their age. With Yu having forgot who he is, Makoto draws his trident in response. After Shinoa Hīragi apologizes for Yu's conduct, Narumi is concerned about her squad's discipline problems.

In Fifteenth Progenitor Lucal Wesker's ward, Narumi along with the combined team, with Shinya Hīragi too, waits for the mission to start. Briefing the team, Narumi is not impressed that Shinoa Squad have apparently not come prepared. Ordering Shinoa to teach Yu how to be polite, when Narumi is interrupted he becomes their team leader for this mission with Shinoa second-in-command. Reproving Yu again for not remembering the name of their target, Narumi is surprised after he lists the names of everyone in not only Shinoa Squad but his own squad as well.

The battle starts, and Narumi permits Yu to take the lead, where he orders him not to die. Joining the battle against Lucal, when the vampire noble grabs Shinoa's scythe and swings her into Narumi's path his would-be collision is prevented by Yu's intervention. When Shihō Kimizuki manages to goad Lucal into charging at him, and Yu has managed to cut Lucal in half, Narumi finishes him off via his trident. Thrilled with the victory with no casualties between them, Narumi and his squad exchange high-fives.

Their team regroups at the meeting spot, and Narumi finds Sergeant Aiko Aihara arrive with only seven surviving team members. He hears although they killed their target, Aihara's squad suffered eight casualties. When Narumi is asked about his team's losses, he moves the responsibility for them coming out unharmed on Shinoa. After Yu offers to keep watch while Aihara's team rests, Narumi pretends to have forgotten Yu's name.

With Guren arriving, Narumi reports that the rookies did very well. Along with Shinoa squad, Narumi squad is directed to join Guren and his team to hunt down Thirteenth Progenitor Crowley Eusford, who with Seventeenth Progenitors Chess Belle, and Horn Skuld have taken hostages. Narumi is to help rescue them outside Nagoya city hall, before they are to head to Nagoya Airport.

Once Narumi reaches Nagoya City Hall, it is clear the hostages are bait. Where Yu insists on bursting in and saving them, Narumi dismisses it as too dangerous. Asked what they should do, Narumi questions Guren what they could do. Narumi has registered the reality that the hostages might need to be shot before they have to move on.

As the top priority is to maintain their numbers, where no one is to die, and the second priority is getting the hostages freed, Narumi concludes that this is because they are needed for another mission after this. Narumi learns from Guren that they need to keep the vampires occupied in the Aichi Prefecture for as long as they can so they can buy enough time for the main Japanese Imperial Demon Army forces in Shibuya to get prepared.

When it is decided that Guren and his squad will attack the three vampire nobles, Narumi with his and Shinoa squad have five minutes to rescue as many hostages as they can. As soon as the five minutes are up everyone has orders to retreat to the Nagoya Airport immediately.

Along with his squad, Narumi is undergoing this process where he comes across Kimizuki who has captured Yu when he returned to try and save Guren. Having already rescued the hostages, Narumi joins Shinoa Squad and many injured soldiers as they flee to the airport. When Rika reports seeing a single vampire straight ahead, Narumi has the order from Shinya that they are to handle this one noble and continue pressing forward.

As Mika engages the Moon Demon Company, Narumi attacks him from the side, only to be blocked. After Shinoa Squad protects and allows Mika to escape, the other humans knock Shinoa down. Where she is called a traitor with calls for her to die, Narumi stops the sword of one of the men and questions if he heard the major general's orders. When the soldier protests, Narumi punches him before stating that those who cannot listen to orders on the battlefield do not belong in the Moon Demon Company. While Shinoa sighs with relief, Makoto taps her on the head and states she still has a lot of explaining to do.

Ordered to move, Narumi finds common vampire soldiers descend from the helicopters ahead. Caught off guard, Narumi finds a vampire has cut through Yayoi who falls to the ground. When Tarō charges in to attack, Narumi tries to stop him to no avail. With Tarō having also been killed, Narumi curses the vampires for the loss of two of his squad members.

After reaching Nagoya Aiport, Narumi attempts to calm Rika after she grabs Shinoa. Announcing that he will take it from here since he is the squad leader, Narumi implies he deal with this. Told it is not up to him by Shinya who has arrived, Narumi questions what he is going to do. Aggrieved, Narumi says they came this far on their orders, even after losing their commander, because they thought they were really doing something.

Where he cannot see why they came here because no one is waiting for them, Narumi is also wary that the bloodsuckers will catch them soon. Narumi turns to whether this decoy mission was meant to be a suicide mission from the start. Hearing that a chopper was supposed to be waiting for them to fly to Shinjuku, where a trap is supposed to be lying in wait for the vampires, Narumi requests an explanation. While Narumi can accept a meaningful suicide mission as long as Guren gives the order, he says the Moon Demon Company obeys Guren alone, not Shinya Hīragi.

Continuing that they are sick of the Hīragis, he regards them as those who sit safely above them and give out orders. Informed that is enough, Narumi asks Shinya how many of them think will follow orders from a higher ranked officer who orders them to march to their deaths. Narumi speaks for the company who are overall disgruntled and ask what they should do.

As Shinya wonders if Guren wants him to protect their lives or continue the mission, Narumi demands an answer. Told to shut up by Shinya, hearing him say they will abandon the mission since Guren says their official orders are to hold position in Nagoya Airport, Narumi appears relieved that they will instead plan to rescue him.

Finding a van pulling up, with Aoi Sangū stepping out, with Kureto Hīragi as well, after Shinya and the members of Guren's squad express immediate alarm, Narumi is concerned by their reaction. Listening as Kureto identifies himself, Narumi and those gathered are congratulated on their successful mission. Assured that thanks to their glorious sacrifices that humanity will now achieve complete victory over vampire-kind, Narumi is instructed to put down his weapon and be at ease. In cautiousness, Narumi hesitates.

When Kureto orders Aoi to kill the "sacrifices," Narumi approaches him to ask what he is talking about. Reminded to drop his weapon, Narumi disregards this order to point out how many of them have died already. Narumi affirms it is his responsibility to keep his subordinates safe. After Kureto remarks on Narumi's passion, his name is asked for. Shouted at by Shinya to not tell him, Narumi is nearby as Kureto announces that nothing can be done to protect him anyway.

Immediately afterward, when Kureto states that everyone is going to die anyway and orders the experiment to begin, Narumi comes under attack by chains launched from the ground at the surviving members of the Moon Demon Company. Summoning his demon, Genbushin to protect him, Narumi is narrowly able to avoid the chains. However, Narumi finds the chains have pierced Rika through the chest and Shūsaku through the shoulder.

Falling to his knees, Narumi asks what just happened. Told to run by Shūsaku's until a second chain pierces through his chest, enraged, Narumi charges at Kureto. Another pair of chains strike down at Narumi from above, but he is protected when Mitsuba and Kimizuki block the attack. Yelled at by Kimizuki to not give up yet, Narumi is surprised to see Yu and Mika join them.

An army of vampires arrive, and with the demon army experiment ongoing, the demon Abaddon is successfully manifested by Mirai Kimizuki due to the seraph within her. After Yu then awakens in his seraph mode to defeat Abaddon, before plummeting to the ground, Narumi throws Genbushin to catch him.

Joining Shinoa squad in escaping the warring human and vampire forces, Narumi secedes from the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. Carrying Yu, who is now unconscious and on Narumi's back, he is helped to flee from pursuing human soldiers by Mika.

Three months later, the group is near the sea. Narumi is near Mika watching over the villagers while Shinoa carries some laundry.

Post-Nagoya Arc[]

Arriving with food he found in a supermarket two kilometers southwest, Narumi throws a can of red bean jam at Kimizuki.

Narumi returns

Returning with food

The group notices that Mika drank the blood provided and approach him. As Shinoa brings up their future plans, they are to take into account that the Japanese Imperial Demon Army will probably hunt them down and kill them. This puts the villagers they are with at risk. Travelling overseas is also not feasible due to how acidic and poisonous the blood-red oceans are, in addition to monsters even worse than Horsemen that swim in their depths.

Surrendering is mentioned, yet when Mika rejects the idea of returning Yu to the army to prevent him from becoming a demon, Narumi tells him to keep his fangy mouth shut unless he has any other options. Narumi is firm that he will save Yu no matter what in order to give his friends' deaths meaning. Hearing Shiho mention he will do absolutely anything to save his sister, then with Yu suggesting they meet up with Guren, which is vetoed by Shinoa as they cannot trust him, Narumi tells Mika this is the circle of discussion they are stuck in.

Asking if Mika has anything to offer, Narumi learns that the vampire queen participated in the Seraph of the End experiments, so they may be able to trust her. Although she was captured, with her whereabouts unknown, rescuing her might be their least complicated option.

Questioning if vampires are less dangerous than the Demon Army, Narumi hears yes. After Mika details that vampires actually care little about humans and are only concerned by power-hungry humans, Narumi then says that describes the Demon Army pretty well. With this, Narumi and the group's next objective is to rescue Krul Tepes before Yu becomes a full demon.

While the group is on the beach, Mika and Yu begin discussing Ferid Bathory so Narumi asks them to stop talking over their heads and explain what they were speaking about. Narumi is updated by Shinoa that Yu and Mika were held in the vampire capital when they were little.

A car engine is heard, and Ferid with Crowley have been sighted. The group's Cursed Gear Stimulants are ordered to be taken, where they are to flee. As they run, Crowley lands in front of them yet with Mitsuba struck, and Yoichi's archery shots deflected, Narumi asks what they are all thinking. Ordered by Shinoa to assist Kimizuki, Narumi obeys and deploys Genbushin.

Unable to win, after Yu surrenders to Crowley and Ferid, he is around when Akane's head in a jar is presented to them. The group later gets on a bus with Ferid and Crowley. Spoken to by Ferid, he is told he has the bodies of all of his squad members packed up in bottles as well. While Narumi is enraged, he is guided by Kimizuki to just let Ferid talk as they seek details.

Taking a bathroom break, in the boy's lavatory Narumi with others attempt to stop Yu from ranting about Guren taunting them with information, but never giving them answers. With the girls then entering the boy's bathroom, they discuss their situation and the Seraph of the End. They decide they must betray Ferid before he betrays them. Narumi joins the group in crouching together and whispering to come up with a signal of when to attack Ferid en masse.

Osaka Arc[]

The squad eventually gets back on the bus and are driven to Osaka Bay. There, the group disembark to see an army of foreign vampires led by second progenitor Urd Geales, and Lest Karr. While Narumi and the group have found Krul, she, along with Ferid have been sentenced to sunlight exposure torture by Urd, where they are monitored by fifth progenitor Ky Luc.

Powerless to act, Narumi and the squad head with Crowley to Ferid's mansion in Osaka. As Mika chides Yu for wishing to bring Akane back to life, explaining that could cause another one of his friends to die, he also talks about Yu becoming a demon. At that, Narumi interrupts to say Yu already is a demon, speculating that this was done after feeling responsible for Mika turning into a vampire.

Told by Yu to not bully Mika, he states all Mika wishes to do is run away with Yu. With Mika against the use of the seraph of the end experiments for being cruel, where they will only give birth to despair, Narumi counters by saying they could be successful the next time. The discussion is ended by Shinoa where he does not speak on it further.

Hearing from Mika that it could be dangerous for him at Ferid's mansion because he is being held hostage by his squad's dead bodies, Narumi agrees to consider that. Glancing around, Narumi thinks the mansion is too neat and must have someone taking care of it. Narumi tells everyone to draw their weapons just as Tenth Progenitor Fuola Honte exits the mansion.

With Fuola immediately attacking Yu, in blocking the strike, Narumi is thrown in the air. Stunned and asking what rank Fuola is, Narumi voices he is higher rank than Lucal Wesker. Landing, Narumi returns to the squad formation. Aware of Fuola and Crowley's ranks, Narumi wonders how Crowley was stronger than Fuola after he defeats him. Told in actuality that Crowley is a seventh progenitor, the squad is challenged to see if their formation can beat him. Apparently a swift battle, Narumi is lying face down on the ground. If they hope to rescue Ferid they must get strong enough to defeat a fifth progenitor.

Along with Shinoa, he wonders why Yu is so calm around Crowley. After Kimizuki says it never occurred to him to think of vampires as former humans, Narumi agrees, adding that from the human point of view vampires are predators. Commenting that being friends with vampires is impossible because of the predator prey relationship, Narumi further remarks how it is rare for a new vampire to be born.

Turning to one such newly born vampire, Narumi questions Mika whether he will save Ferid and if he is an ally of Crowley. Slicing his own arm to draw blood, Narumi then asks when Mika will stop viewing Yu as his family and if he is retaining his humanity. When Kimizuki intervenes to stop him since he disagrees with his method, Narumi receives the perspective that they themselves are not human anymore. Additionally humans have always killed each other, so they could become friends with vampires.

Desiring the answer to a question, Narumi once again asks how much humanity Mika still has. While Mika feels his humanity is vanishing, his feelings for Yu have not changed at all. Narumi says that if vampires can cling onto their humanity then alliances are possible.

Shinoa Squad then enter Ferid's mansion where they head to the kitchen to eat. Afterward they will go to the basement. In enjoying a desert, Narumi comments on what is trying to be said when it is mentioned how the girls are enjoying them.

Shibuya Arc[]

At Shibuya, he has his hand on the stretcher Yu is sat on, with Yoichi, Mitsuba and Kimizuki nearby. Narumi agrees with Mitsuba when she states what they all can hear sounds like a battle, then comments he does not like this. After Yoichi tells him he is going after Kimizuki as he checks on his sister, Narumi tags along with them.[5] Having been separated, Narumi has not joined the squad in their escape from Shibuya with Krul. He may not know that Mika has turned into a demon, and Guren and Mahiru, with Krul and Ferid as well are heading to progress with their plan.

Powers and Abilities[]

Natural abilities[]

Narumi, like all people who wield Cursed Gear, has heightened strength and regeneration abilities. Able to stand a chance against supernaturally powerful vampires, Narumi can heal from wounds that would be lethal to humans unable to resort to such weaponry. Also a capable leader, Narumi has the trust of his squad, and functions well in directing others, fighting along with them too. Of his own accord, Narumi traversed some distance to locate and gather food supplies.

Cursed Gear[]

Makoto Narumi's trident
  • Genbushin (玄武針 Genbushin?, lit. "Black Tortoise Needle"): A manifestation-type demon weapon from the Rakshasa series that takes the form of a trident. Apparently not able to be condensed into a smaller form for portability, Narumi carries the long weapon as it is. Genbushin has the ability to manifest one or more shields, which are strong enough to block ranged attacks from vampires. Before breaking, the shield can briefly withstand seraph manipulated chains.
    • In the anime, Genbushin's ability is shown as a black metalic shield while in the manga, chapter 60 shows it as multiple, projected shields in the shape of turtle shells.

Quotes[]

Seraph of the End: Guren Ichinose: Catastrophe at Sixteen[]

Book 6[]

I was told growing up that the Order of the Imperial Moon is the greatest organization on Earth. If that’s true, then how could something like that happen?! …How could they just treat us like garbage? I… looked up to you people. The Ichinoses are supposed to be strong and kind, to show us the way to a better future… That’s what my dad said… So why…

–Makoto to Guren Ichinose about Sakae Ichinose’s execution. Chapter 2

Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign[]

So you're the bratty kid who broke regulations and showed up late to his first meeting, eh? I'll be honest with you. I'm not sure I trust you to have my back.

–Makoto Narumi to Yūichirō Hyakuya. Chapter 25 "Narumi & The 20-Year-Old Yu"

Sixteen..? They said they were twenty!

–Makoto Narumi about Yu Chapter 26 "Thirst Logic"

Playtime is over, kids. Even if you're as useless as rusty spoons, our squad will make this a success.

–Makoto Narumi to Shinoa Squad. Chapter 27 "Vampire Noble Lucal"

If you can't listen to orders on the battlefield, you don't belong in the Moon Demon Company!!

–Makoto to a soldier who tries to kill Shinoa Hīragi after she protects the vampire Mikaela Hyakuya. Chapter 35 "Traitorous Allies"

But, sir! What are you going to do then?! We came to this godforsaken place on orders! Even after we lost our commander, we pushed on this far! That's because we thought what we did had meaning! So what is it?! What did we come here for?! There's not a single damn thing here that I can see! No one is waiting for us! There's no sign of a trap for the vampires either! So what do we do?! There are bloodsuckers hot on our tail, and they'll be here soon! Was this decoy mission meant to be suicide from the start?!

–Makoto Narumi to Shinya Hīragi. Chapter 38 "The Namanari Awakens"

Y'know, an explanation would be nice right about now. Well, Major General Shinya? What is going on here? If there's a meaning to our deaths, I'm okay with this being a suicide mission. But that's only if Lt. Colonel Guren Ichinose gave the order. The Moon Demon Company obeys him... and him alone. We will not die for you, Shinya Hiragi.

–Makoto Narumi to Shinya Hīragi. "The Namanari Awakens"

Orders...? How many of us do you think have already died?! I have a responsibility to keep my subordinates safe!!

–Narumi to Kureto Hīragi. Chapter 39 "The Beginning of the Plan"

Oh, of course the vampires pick now to show up.

–Narumi Chapter 40 "Trumpet of the Apocalypse"

Okay, so we run. To where? As long as we stay in Japan, the army can hunt us down. Are you trying to say we should go overseas? You know humanity can't cross the ocean anymore, right? During the catastrophe, the world's oceans turned acidic and poisonous. Not only that, the waters are swimming with monsters even worse than Horsemen.

–Aware of the condition of the wider world Chapter 43 "Where It All Begins"

We can't leave the country. That means we're being hunted but have nowhere to run. We might be able to beat them back a few times, yeah... But that option will only last as long as our supply of curse stimulant pills. Once they're gone, we can't effectively fight them, or vampires, or even Horsemen. And for the cherry on the cake, Yu is slowly getting possessed by his demon. Without some kind of intervention, he'll eventually go full demon on us. The only ones capable of providing that kind of medical care are in the Demon Army. So pretty much our only real option is to turn ourselves in...

–In favour of returning to the army "Where It All Begins"

I SAID SHUT UP!! I lost my whole squad, my friends, to that stupid experiment they're doing on you. Don't you tell me to 'set it aside.' I am going to save you, no matter what. If I don't, their deaths will have meant nothing.

–Makoto to Yu who is spending longer as a demon each day "Where It All Begins"

Anyways, that's the pickle we're in right now. Just between us humans, we're going around in the same circles as yesterday. So! Vampire kid. Do you have any actual alternatives to offer?

–Interacting with Mika Chapter 43 "Where It All Begins"

I've lost my comrades because of the experiment on you, don't joke with me about this. I will protect you at any cost, otherwise their death would be meaningless

–His comrades in mind "Where It All Begins"

What the hell?! Are any of them thinking at all?!

–Makoto after the group charges in to rescue Mitsuba from Crowley Chapter 45 "Familiar Faces"

Is he really that smart?

–Makoto to Mika about Ferid Chapter 47 "Prayer's Price"

Whoa. And you need to stop having a conniption fit right now, stupid Yu! There's no point in secret planning if you shout everything.

–Makoto. "The Making of an Angel"

We'll have to betray him before he has the chance to betray us.

–Makoto about Ferid. "The Making of an Angel"

Hope. Yeah, this time, it failed, but maybe the next time it'll work. It's exactly that kind of determination that allowed humanity to grow as much as it did.

–Makoto to Mika. Chapter 52 "Suspicious Mansion"

They herd us humans together like animals. So nature takes its course and, as prey, we develop an instinctual fear of our predators. Becoming friends with a vampire is impossible for us. Think about it. Can predator and prey coexist? Do lions and sheep really lie down together? Could cats be friends with mice?

–Makoto to Mika and their group. Chapter 53 "Holy Knight's Secret"

In the Demon Army's archives, there's an intel report that says it's against vampire law for them to reproduce. It speculates that there hasn't been a new vampire in at least a century. We certainly haven't seen any of our people turned, even after everything. None of us know what to make of that. We have no clue what vampire-kind is thinking. Vampires are the enemy. They are to be feared. If we don't kill them, they'll kill us. That's what I've always thought, and it's what the Demon Army teaches us. But. Suddenly, out of nowhere, we find a rare, newborn vampire. If your story is true, and you weren't making up your human ancestry--

–Makoto to Mika and their group. "Holy Knight's Secret"

Anyway, I have a question for Mr. Newborn vampire here. Saving Ferid. Befriending Crowley. How possible is either? How practical? This once, I will say that I'll trust you, Mikaela. That is why I ask you now... How long can that trust last? For how long will you continue to view Yu as your 'family'? The vampire nobility--like Ferid and Crowley--have probably lived for over a millennium. Do they still retain some fragment of their humanity? Or does anything human about them vanish with time, leaving them completely different beings? I want empirical data. I've been watching you, y'know. Now's about when you should be getting thirsty. Thirst enough to attack people. Well? Looking at this fresh blood on my arm, how much of your humanity is still in there? Do we start looking like food--

–Makoto to Mika and their group. "Holy Knight's Secret"

Basically, despite everything else fading or decaying entirely, it is possible for a vampire to cling to a fragment of their humanity. And in that case, an alliance with them becomes possible.

–Makoto to Mika and their group. "Holy Knight's Secret"

Uh, you guys do remember that I'm the oldest here, right? You're supposed to respect your elders!

–To Yu, Kimizuki, and Yoichi Chapter 54 "Sinner's Christmas"

That's right. I know all that. But I still can't give up on him, or the others. What is the correct move to make? What is Lt. Colonel Guren thinking? Bringing all of humanity back to life? There's no way the Hīragi Family wants that to happen. And if that's the case... what is it that I should be doing?

–Narumi's thoughts. "Three Black Demons"
