"What's the Point?" (意味がアルカ? Imi ga aruka??) is the one hundred and forty-second chapter of the Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign manga series, written by Takaya Kagami and illustrated by Yamato Yamamoto.
Synopsis[]
Around the time when vampire cities were being built, Urd and Ky Luc discussed the new blood cultivation system. Speaking about reasons for living, Ky Luc lived how his mother told him to, which Urd regarded as a curse. When Ky Luc attacked Urd, he was cut apart yet was noted to have improved.
Over five hundred years, Urd focused on building the vampire cities. In eighteenth-Century Europe, Urd defended a human from Ky Luc. Curious why humans were not being unnecessarily harmed, Ky Luc wondered if Urd could see the future. Urd offered no defence to Ky Luc's follow up attack. Halting, Ky Luc heard that Urd knew he would follow the laws he set. Urd also divulged he had a dream, where Ky Luc felt he had been freed from his mother's curse.
Presently, Ky Luc is opposite Ferid along with Guren and Mahiru. Deeming Ferid dangerous, Ky Luc then senses Mahiru behind him. Their joint attacks are avoided and Ky Luc activates his weapon, before retreating. Unable to pursue him, Guren means to join Shinya and the others. As he retreats, Ky Luc is captured by Shinoa Squad.

Summary[]
It is considered that vampires do not sleep, eat, or lust. Backed up against a wall, a woman is attacked by a vampire. All the while, the thought continues that vampires are shallow, empty bloodsucking beasts who have been around for so long they have forgotten why they still live. At last, they are supposed to be.[1]
In an underground vampire city, inside one of the buildings Urd sat opposite Ky Luc. As Ky Luc regarded the stemware filled with child's blood he thought it looks tasty. Addressing Urd to raise how he does not drink blood directly from the neck anymore, Ky Luc had also heard how he built a blood cultivation system that uses humans. A number of children are envisioned in this cultivation system.[2]
With Ky Luc curious as to why, Urd contemplated the matter. Continuing, from what Ky Luc heard it was Urd who set all the laws that govern the vampire cities too. Ky Luc clarified whether those rules were to help vampires, not bind them. He rationalized that Urd was trying to give vampires a reason to live.[3]
Coming to speak, Urd said that if Ky Luc understood all that then he should obey those laws, observe the hierarchy and stop attacking him. Sipping his drink, Ky Luc found the situation weird and questioned why bother to do any of that in the first place. Judging that Urd is a vampire with little reason to live, Ky Luc asked why Urd would bother.[4]
Recalling that he asked that question of Ky Luc first, Urd wanted to know why he clings to the idea of growing stronger. Deeming it a good question, Ky Luc claimed that he forgot. Urd sought to know if Ky Luc still had his desires from when he were human. Responding to the initial question first, Ky Luc had always wondered if even humans had a reason for living, never mind vampires. Ky Luc stated he sure didn't when he was one.[5]
As Urd awaited him to speak further, Ky Luc questioned was there even any meaning in humans being alive. Divulging that he didn't have a reason so just did what he was told to, Ky Luc specified it was to get strong and don't die. That is what Ky Luc was told, so that is what he did.[6]
Urd enquired who told him that, to which Ky Luc answered his mother, he thought. Seeing that is why Ky Luc has lived as he has for a thousand years, Urd spoke that his mother cast a potent curse on him. Ky Luc laughed that maybe she did. With that, Ky Luc leapt out his chair, yet with a bored expression.[7]
Unfazed, Urd commented again with this. This time there was a change in strategy, that Urd was still powerful enough to see. Having moved to his side, Ky Luc saw his chance. Urd thought how Ky Luc had improved from before. As Ky Luc joyfully announced he had got him, Urd was on his feet and had struck him in half upwards.[8]
Crashing to the floor, Ky Luc remarked that he missed again. Informing him that was not half bad, Urd told Ky Luc that he almost reached him. Amazed to hear he did, Ky Luc concluded that it was okay for him to keep living for one more day.[9]
Finding it unusual, Urd stated Ky Luc was only the second vampire that he had met who had not lost sight of themselves. Curious as to who the other one was, Ky Luc questioned if they were powerful. Wondering where they were, Ky Luc said to Urd he will kill them for him. Regarding Urd's expression, Ky Luc considered that was the first time he saw a vampire look truly sad.[10]
As he walked after Urd through his city, Ky Luc thought how after that he started following Urd wherever he went. As buildings were being developed, Urd interacted with other vampires such as a vampire supervisor who appeared involved in the construction. While Ky Luc seemed disinterested in these plans, it was observed how he followed Urd.[11]
After one hundred years, and then five hundred, the underground city looked complete. Continuing his thoughts, Ky Luc contemplated how Lord Urd never said a thing. He simply focused on building the vampire cities.[12]
In his clothing that he would wear by the present day, Ky Luc thought how the more he watched, the more intrigued he became. Ky Luc wondered why Urd did all this. In eighteenth-century Europe, Urd mingled with the humans of that time. Ky Luc remained curious at what reason did Urd have to do what he did.[13]
There with him among the humans, Ky Luc smiled contently before manifesting his sword. Directing Ky Luc to not draw human attention to himself, Urd added that dealing with the result was an annoyance he does not need. Retorting that if he killed all of them then there wouldn't be any witnesses, Ky Luc declared that today he would finally make Urd draw his blade.[14]
Not impressed, Urd responded that this was pointless before questioning Ky Luc why he kept following him. Ky Luc was happy to answer Urd that it was because he respected him. Urd was surprised, where Ky Luc added that he wanted him to acknowledge his strength. Ky Luc also wanted Urd to rely on him. While Urd reiterated it was pointless, Ky Luc responded that it was not so to him. His reason for living was a lot less distinct than Urd's.[15]
When Ky Luc invoked his sword, people around noticed before he seized a child and threw him towards a wall. When Urd rescued the child, Ky Luc knew he would protect the kid since Urd was the one who laid down the law that humans weren't to be unnecessarily harmed after all.[16]
In the midst of attacking Urd himself, Ky Luc wondered what the point of this was, and gave some thought to whether Urd could see the future. Urd stood motionless as Ky Luc was millimeters from striking his head. Ending his own attack, Ky Luc questioned why didn't Urd dodge it.[17]
Claiming that it was because there are too many people, Urd said he also knew Ky Luc always follows the laws he set so had faith in him. Landing, Ky Luc laughed that he wished one day Urd would tell him his reason for living. Reasoning that he never would, Ky Luc felt that was okay too and that he supported Urd because he felt like it.[18]
At that point Urd shared with Ky Luc that he had a dream. Astonished, Ky Luc processed that Urd had a dream. That day, Ky Luc considered that it felt like he had finally been freed from his mother's curse.[19]
Presently in Shibuya, Ky Luc stands opposite Ferid with Mahiru and Guren too. Thinking that Ferid clearly has some reason to live, Ky Luc wonders what it is. As Ferid places his chains in the ground, Guren states to Mahiru that they need a plan. For the question of how many seconds until those chains reach Ky Luc, the answer is he will dodge them if they are going that slow.[20]
Mahiru intends to hide the chains with an illusion. Impressed she has a handy trick like that, Ferid checks how long it would take to set up. When Mahiru states thirty seconds, Ferid will act then.[21]
As Mahiru vanishes, Guren ingests a cursed gear stimulant. As curse marks cover Guren's face, Ferid characteristically jokes about him dying of an overdose. Not caring when he dies but it just cannot be now, Guren feels the ends have justified the means for too long and he has hurt too many people. For that, Ferid feels they are the "do anything it takes" trio.[22]
Commenting that Ferid is an odd one, Ky Luc then asks his question of what is his reason to live. After Guren specifies it is seven seconds, Ferid stalls for time with his display that he dreams of everyone living together in peace and harmony.[23]
Thinking how he is dangerous, Ky Luc also considers Ferid is an obstruction to Lord Urd too. Ky Luc wonders what Ferid's victory condition is. Appearing behind him, Mahiru uses her illusion powers to envelop the chains moving underground. As Ky Luc continues to contemplate to himself to find a way to derail Ferid and Guren's victory and focus only on that, Mahiru looks to him anxiously.[24]
Suddenly questioning who is that behind him, Ky Luc can feel Mahiru there. Damning it, Mahiru shouts that Ky Luc broke the illusion already. Not only that, but Ky Luc turns having noticed Ferid and Guren charging to him. Simultaneously, the chains break out from underground.[25]
Where the chains are an attack he cannot see, Ky Luc thinks to himself if he tries to look he will get hit. Closing his eyes, Ky Luc moves back to avoid Guren's sword aiming for his neck. Attempting to draw Ky Luc's attention, at the same time Ferid directs the chains to fire into him.[26]
Ky Luc is able to evade the multitude of chains that attempt to stab into him, and Ferid laughs that he is a monster. Ky Luc speaks for his sword to drink his blood. One strike is all it will take for him to kill them all.[27]
In response, Mahiru shouts for Guren to pull back. Ferid and Guren adjust their battle positions for what they think Ky Luc has planned. For this, Ky Luc grins that he is just kidding.
Ky Luc leaps away.[28]
With Ky Luc abandoning the battle, Ferid is shocked while calling to not let him get away. Announcing that he will kill Ferid next time, Ky Luc gains even more distance between them as he leaps across buildings. Ferid concedes it is no good and they cannot catch up.[29]
Ferid states he still thinks Ky Luc is more powerful than he is, to Mahiru's disbelief. Mahiru considers that planning for Ky Luc is going to be a pain. Also dejected, Guren reasons that they take it one step at a time. Guren says for them to go and rendezvous with Shinya and the others.[30]
As he soars through the air, Ky Luc mentions how Ferid has gotten pretty strong hence why he has decided to let Lord Urd know. Ky Luc still feels if he went at it for real then he could probably still kill Ferid.[31]
In the air, a shadowy mass appears directly in front of Ky Luc. His surprise at this sight turns to further shock as his wrists and legs are bound by shadows. Recognizing it as an attack, Ky Luc thinks how he did not even notice. Wondering who it is, Ky Luc assumes Ferid.[32]
The order to smash him down results in Ky Luc being hurled into the ground. Unable to see or sense who is behind them, Ky Luc thinks why as he lies bound. As they step towards him, Ky Luc wonders who they are.[33]
Shinoa Squad are the group who captured him. Mitsuba along with Kimizuki and Yoichi regard Ky Luc. Answering his question, Shinoa explains they are just his friendly, neighborhood humans. While Shinoa is pleased they have caught one high-ranking progenitor, Ky Luc is anything but.[34]

Chapter Notes[]
Cover Details[]
The titular image of chapter 142 is a very rare case where it is not major characters who are featured. Instead, there are briefly seen minor characters, namely a woman and the vampire attacking her. Also rarely, there is a recollection occurring, an almost unique one in that it is not clear who the thinker is. It is possibly Urd or Ky Luc considering the nature of vampires.
- Another underground kingdom that is not Sanguinem is seen in the series. This is apparently Urd's domain, the first sight of his city beneath the Earth. Moscow was seen in Chapter 42: "Sanguinem's End" yet Urd has formed vampire cities underground.
- The recollection events of this chapter possibly take place soon after the previous Chapter 141: "A Reason Not to Die". Urd had spoken with Ky Luc regarding his reason for living in 13th Century Moscow and mentioned how he had been living as he had for the past century. The 1,000 years mentioned here is likely that century, since another five hundred years shows the era to be the 18th-Century.
- It seems the underground vampire cities and blood cultivation system began to be built in the thirteenth century. There are multiple underground vampire cities, not just Sanguinem in Japan and Urd's city, presumably in Russia. Another one would likely be in Germany where Lest Karr rules.
- The laws that govern the vampire cities were made by Urd. One such law is that humans are not to be bitten directly anymore.
- In Chapter 116: "Brother and Sister" it was known to people living in ancient Greece that vampires were living entities and not a myth. In Chapter 105: "Saito and Urd" the titular characters had an idea of a vampire utopia, and where seen living above ground in Romania. For how vampires lived and what people knew of them, they literally went underground in the thirteenth century. It seems this way of living only came to an end in Chapter 1: "The World of Blood Legacy" when they emerged to claim the ruined world after the Catastrophe and gather humans for a blood supply.
- Ky Luc discloses to Urd that his sole purposes of living and becoming stronger came from his mother. Where Ky Luc's mother's words to him as a child shaped his behavior into adulthood, they have also subsisted for him over a thousand years as a vampire. Ky Luc thinks it was his mother who said that, so rather than remembering specifically her wishes, it is her impact that has remained on a vampire whose desires should have faded long ago.
- Urd considers Ky Luc's mother to have cast a potent curse on him for how Ky Luc was shaped by them.
- Clearly his mother's wish and maybe not entirely his own, this might explain Ky Luc's bored expression in commencing another attack against Urd. A creature of habit in attacking someone stronger to become that, in this chapter Ky Luc would adjust his goals to following Urd for his dream and to not assail him.
- A vampire's strength is determined by whose blood transformed them, and the length of time they have become a vampire. This chapter is among others that show that practice may literally enhance a vampire's strength to the point they may be stronger than what their rank indicates.
- Urd seems curious in noting that Ky Luc has improved from before. In the previous chapter, Ferid also commented how Ky Luc was stronger than what he should be as a fifth progenitor. Saitō also commented on how Ky Luc's strength was more similar to a third progenitor's in Chapter 106: "I Am Your...".
- For other vampires who are stronger than what their bloodline and age should allow them to be, Ferid has also tremendously boosted his capabilities by absorbing other vampires.
- Urd states there is a second vampire who did not lose sight of themselves, yet appears sad when asked who it is. The expression of sadness in Urd is notable given vampires are not supposed to feel emotions.
- For who this other vampire who has not lost sight of themselves is, speculation is that it is Saitō who evidently remained committed to finding the the First.
- The underground vampire cities were built over five hundred years in which it is implied Urd was personally invested in overseeing the construction. The decor may have been the same across them, hence the European style buildings seen in Japan since Urd was behind their making. The prominent large pipes that were possibly involved in the blood cultivation system were present in the thirteenth century.
- Another interest in humans is shown by Urd where he is seen mingling among what appear to be upper-class members of Europe in the eighteenth century. In Chapter 42: "Sanguinem's End" he would also express an interest in human arts such as ballet.
- Views on vampires in the eighteenth century aren't entirely clear. It seems people did not comment on the signature ears vampires have so may not have recognized one. They did not seem to live side by side, Urd was against Ky Luc drawing human attention to himself, and described it as an annoyance to deal with the result.
- Ky Luc stated that he was following Urd because he respected him. Wanting Urd to acknowledge his strength, Ky Luc also wanted Urd to rely on him. This was clear hundreds of years earlier when Ky Luc was eager to be someone that could kill others for Urd.
- The distinct weapon that Ky Luc is able to form was able to be done in the eighteenth century, where he is also seen wearing his attire then that he has in the present day.
- Unlike other vampires who regard humans as disposable livestock, second progenitor Urd defends a human child.
- This time, Urd makes no attempt to defend himself from Ky Luc. Speaking on a personal level, Urd states that he had faith in Ky Luc and that he has a dream. This certainly transformed Ky Luc, who felt himself freed of his mother's curse to become stronger.
- Mahiru is seen on the side of Ferid and Guren but she would be invisible to Ky Luc. In Chapter 54: "Sinner's Christmas" Ky Luc was unable to see Mahiru-no-Yo since as a fifth progenitor he is unable to outright view demons. The next Chapter 55: "Coffins of Obsession" shows that he was able to sense a demon's presence however. His senses might be more honed here, but Ky Luc could again detect Mahiru close behind him.
- Mahiru's illusion powers can conceal Ferid's chains. While it is an ability to keep weapons invisible, like herself these cannot be seen by Ky Luc but he can still sense them.
- In activating his sword yet finding them still willing to battle, Ky Luc appears to have had a change in mind and instead use that chance to retreat from the fight against Ferid, Guren, and unknown to him, Mahiru.
- Unable to overcome third progenitor Krul Tepes in Chapter 137: "The Queen's Time", Ferid could still attain victory due to Mahiru and Guren's plan in Chapter 138: "The Queen's Time". Despite his increase in power from consuming a third progenitor, and by acquiring the Arcane weapon, Ferid thinks Ky Luc is more powerful than him. On his part, Ky Luc noted that Ferid moves faster than a third progenitor, yet as a fifth still feels confident that he can beat Ferid.
- Having failed to snare Ky Luc and with the likelihood of the two second progenitors Saito and Urd finding out their plan, Guren means to join with Shinya and the others. The others would be his squad, Sayuri, with Shigure then Mito and Goshi. There is also Kureto and Aoi. The place where they are to rendezvous is the hotel they hid in before the Catastrophe.
- Ky Luc could be forgiven for assuming it was Ferid who could manifest a shadowy mass given his unexpected capabilities, where he did not hear that Ferid thought he could not catch him so had went elsewhere. If if was not Ferid, or Mahiru, it would be Shikama Dōji who would have the capabilities to use a shadow energy to ambush a fifth progenitor undetected. The First's power was acquired by Shinoa Hīragi in Chapter 136: "The Godtouched" and used in Chapter 139: "The Queen's Time". The chapter confirm the one behind this by showing Shinoa at the end.
- Over chapters Chapter 59: "Who Is Your Owner?", Chapter 60: "Surrounding Ky Luc", and Chapter 61: "Who Is More Bored?", Ky Luc fought against the members of Shinoa Squad yet does not appear to recognize them here. It may be the case that Ky Luc does not pay attention to specific humans, in Chapter 132: "Battle to The First" Ky Luc regarded Yu as a human on Ferid's side, rather than the partial seraph power using individual that he is. Shinoa Squad are certainly aware of Ky Luc as being a fifth progenitor.
- From Ky Luc and the vampire progenitors' standpoint it was sensible to alert them of Ferid's increased power. Where Krul could discern it, higher ranked vampires of which Lest Karr is also in the area may be able to perceive that he is able to absorb other vampires. That update is hindered given that Ky Luc has been captured by another faction, namely Shinoa Squad.
